And I'm really serious about this....
I'm looking into joining the Coast Guard. Obviosuly I have a lot of questions for the recruiter, but I've requested the information package and I've been researching it.
Does anyone here know anything more than what the general knowledge is of something like this?

MW was in the Navy, if that helps - maybe drop her a line.

I spent all day yesterday searching for whatever info I could come up with and that site seemed to provide the best info. Limited though. I want to really knoww what the day is like and such. I want to know what it's like to be a woman in the Coast Guard.
andyp, why do you think that? My mom says that also. She's all for it.

I wanted my kid to go into the CG or Navy but he opted for the Marines. If I had life to live over I'd of joined one of those three. I would say go for it!

Coming out of H.S., I made the wait list for the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. I would have gone if they would have given me a free ride. But I ended up at Georgia Tech. A career in the CG would have been very interesting. I feel like I missed out not serving somehow, someway in the military.

My ex's uncle just retired from the Coast Guard. He was a pilot and loved it. Are you thinking reserve or active? Just remember that there are places like Juneau, Alaska. I know they liked it up there but at the same time it is a hard post. (Or so I hear) I was looking into it (reserves) a year and a half ago. But with my job and all the travelling I just couldn't swing it.

I was never really interested in the military, but it seems like I might be a good fit with the CG.....I'm really attracted to the adventure. And I can't figure out what I want to do with my life. I don't want to finish school yet since I don't know what to study. I'm hating the office environment only because I'm bored out of my mind. Don't get me wrong, I definitely enjoy the nice paycheck, the perks, the life. I'm just mentally extremely bored. It's so mundane to stare into a computer all day. I spoke breifly with a recruiter on the phone and she went through a checklist of questions regarding my life and health. Everything was a "no". Not married, no kids, no health problems, etc.
I started to get a little scared by the idea this morning on my way into work though.

I'm thinking about active duty. It doesn't really seem like I have much to loose. It's just a little scary to sign my life away for years.

When I graduated HS I wanted to join the ARMY. My grandpa a WWII vet and former recruiter, sucessfully talked me out of it. (at the request of my father I'm sure. I'm still sorry I didn't do it, I think it would suit me much better than what I'm doing now.

I haven't known anyone in the Coast Guard but FWIW the people I have known in other branches of service have never mentioned anything close to regret for the time they have put in, if anything, gratitude for the experience. I have tossed around the idea to help pay for school. I think my parents would lose their minds (they already did when I sort of hinted at it) but I think it sounds like a really great opportunity.

Aye. I've given a lot of thought to joining the military (probably Navy), but as of yet I can't rationalize dedicating that much of my life to something I might hate. Who knows though.
