it's the spurs on the achilles acting up again. But this time it's not from increasing my mileage too quickly, it's just from trying to get back into running. I ran about 3 miles friday evening, and saturday morning I could barely walk on it until I got it stretched out. I bought some advil and the pain isn't nearly as bad, but it's still there. I fear my next run will bring it all back again.
I want to run through it, but not do any more damage. any ideas?

I'll give you an achilles cure but you have to have a high tolerance on the "dork factor" scale.
Do ya?
www.zcoils.com
I've been running in them exclusively for 2-months now and am lovin' it. They have a good following in and around Wobegon. I've heard some great stories of achilles aches disappearing with these. They been great for my hip and others love them for their knees and arches and backs.
Believe me now or believe me later. I think this is the next evolution in running shoes. And it's a slam dunk for achilles problems from the testimonies of local runners I know.

jrjo, those are high in "dorkiness" but certainly interesting, and worth investigating. I could go back to my foot doctor, but he'd tell me to give up running. I'm not sure my PCP would give me the cortisone shot, but he is a runner and would do something to keep me running.

Oh yeah. It's just steel instead of foam. There's another company out there too called Spira. Some of their models were a recent Running Times or RW (i can't remember which) shoe review.
The shoes don't give off a "bounce" effect like you're probably thinking. They're great for training, but weightwise, I still prefer racing in flats.

Keltic, I think jrjo is playing a cruel joke on you.
Just another money making gimic, that will do nothing in the long term for your achillies, in fact junk like this could cause further damage.
If your only running 3 miles and are getting achillies soreness then it's back to basics
First. Take a week off.
Ice, massage and stretch. 3 times per day. 4 or more even better.
Put a couple (2) of heel lifts in each of your shoes (thats your normal work shoes) You should be looking at building up your heel by about 50mm. 1. 3/4 inches.
WEEK 2. Day 1. on a flat surface, walk 50 metres slowly jog 50m. repeat by 10.
Day 2. Same
Day 3. Off
Day 4. Same as 1+2
Day 5. walk 50m. jog 75m repeat by 10
Day 6. Same
Day 7. Walk 50m jog 100m. etc. etc.
Ice massage and stretch after every session.
Should get ANY archilies soreness in training. STOP immediately and take another week off...... Start again.
You should gradually work towards to increasing distance back to your 3 mile mark, steer clear of hills for a while. Remove one (1) of the heel lifts from each of your shoes.
Provided you have no recurrence of you injury I would remove the remaining heel lifts after about 8 weeks.
There is no quick way to get on top of an achillies injury so take it easy and err on the side of caution

Phar.. No jokes. Zip me off a PM and I'll tell you more. I've been talking with a few other runners about them off these forums. And if there was anybody suseptible to "further damage" by running in a gimic shoe, it would be me, hands down. But I kid you not in saying these shoes have been serving me wonderfully. And like my recumbent or Fluidjoint or homeschooling, I've no qualms about coming here with success stories about what's worked for me.

Keltic,
Another thing to check is to see if your calf is all knotted up, Full of spasms. If you have on spasm in there it can wreck havoc on the achilles. As I have said before, check out www.julstro.com.

Posted: 05/28/04 - 13:15 Post subject: PHAR Pardon me for saying so, but you don't know what you're
talking about.
I've been running since I was ten. I started in converse all stars because that's all they had back then. I stuck added foam in the shoes for impact.
Then Tiger came out with some shoes, but they didn't last a week, so it was back to converse...
Then the waffle's came out and I wore those. Better, but not perfect. Motion control an issue.
Used DMSO early on to keep IT band at bay in HS doing 100+ mile weeks...
Got first pair of orthotics after doing some lab-rat work for Dr. Eddie Coyle and getting referred to Dr. Kline in rehab at UT who then referred me to Dr. Brace.
Always tried diff shoes, but still impact issues after 50-60 mile weeks, never could push past that even taking all the supps I could to fix inflammation issues etc.
Ran across these in March and INSTANTLY was able to ramp up to 70 mile weeks... Been runnng regular 20 milers on the weekend over extremely hilly terrain which would have normally made it impossible to run the next week or so ...
Z-Coils are the bomb. Not only that but the heels (which were the only things I wore out and that usually in two months) you can replace for $25 making these THE best and MOST economical trainers I have ever had.
My plantar fasciitis is totally gone and I don't even worry about running on concrete or asphalt any more.
This shoe is going to take off. Especially because more runners are non-waifs and impact IS an issue.
