I don't know!

I have SPD pedals and I like them. You get a set of LOOK's, (and as a bonus you will get to walk funny)

Of course if you're going to use your bike for commute, not for racing, or riding centuries, then by all means, stay with the regular pedals. Just don't wear the whole bike shorts/bike jersey cycling team uniform with your sneakers. People will point and stare.

Sweet ride, Deb! I think the two of you will be very happy together!
For the clipless record, I was terrified too. I got SPD-SL pedals and they are very user-friendly. Explain your concern to your bike shop guy (who sounds AWESOME, by the way) and he'll help you with it.

get toe clips. it has a lot of the features that the clipless pedal have, Yes i can push and pull on by stroke. it will get you used to the "locked" in feeling but able to get your foot out in a hurry.

for a 1/2 mile commute the special shoes and gear aint worth it in my book. i use an old pair of running shoes as my "bike" shoes plu i can walk into a grocery store on the way home without sounding like Gregory Hines.

But I will be using the bike for cross training. I am currently riding my 60 dollar bike at least 50 miles a week. I want that to maybe double with the new bike.

For a 1/2 mile commute you don't need clipless but for rides you might want them.

Toe clips however scared me. My shoes/laces would get hung up in there where the clipless just take a very simple turn of your foot, same move every time and you're free.
