I might become an organic farmer!
Piece of property is for sale here. 80 acres ~ 45 farmable. Now I can't afford the whole plot and build a house on it.
A fellow from church is a banker and retired farmer - says 'Well you could probably swing it if you got someone to farm it. ' Talking with a buddy of mine who's farming (conventional) now - it might work if it was done organically. The lower yield would be offset some what by the lower cost ( chemicals and labor) and the premium price organic grain gets.
Basically I'd pay him to do the work. Since he has the farm equipment etc. He also has a fair size hog operation that could contribute some er byproduct to the organic farm!
Lots more research to do but might be able to make a go of this. Esp since the farm wouldn't have to make a living but offset the very high mortgage I be carrying.
Now if I become an organic farmer do I have to get a micro bus and vote democrat?

My uncle does something similar.
He has 180 acres.
Raises race horses on part.
Leases out part to a corn farmer
The government pays him to not cut down trees on the rest.
Pretty sweet deal

My husband is Japanese. Soybeans are second to rice! We love edamame! And corn ROCKS!
BTW, my grandpa grows soybeans but they are mainly used to feed the animals.

As long as that hog op provides some products for your table, then I'd say it's a GO!
BTW--if you go organic you must smell like patchouli and stop wearing a bra.

And he has to lie out in a freshly tilled field at night communicating with his unborn seeds.

I am sooooo jealous. My dream is to start an organic farm and sell produce to local markets and roadside. Lots of science involved in developing an organic farm...

this would be just a grain farm. The land is a bit small and remote to make a go of it with normal farming.
Myself I think organic is bunk but if people will pay more for something that takes less work and up from cash who am I to argue?
Still so much stuff to consider to see if it'll work

Good luck on the organic thing. There are usally some fairly good size hoops you have to jump through to be certified "organic".
I garden my little vegetable garden organically...except for the Sevin I spread over the zucchini plants to keep the cucumber beetles away. I had zucchini through October last year.
I don't count the lead directed toward the deer though. That generally falls away from the garden.
