S'no'w Fun Run (5 mi), Lake Geneva WI
I always seem to come into this race flat - this has been the only race I've done every one of the four years (now!) I've been running. I can't get loose, and I always am chilled, as if I were coming down with something. This year was no different. Despite a nice temperature (38 ) and dry roads (no snow anywhere), I was just in a sweat, which did not help being outside, as did a slight but noticable breeze from the southwest.
I could not get my legs loose through the whole race, and I had the very unpleasant experience of people pasing me at a 10:1 ratio. On reaching the turnaround point, which due to the course layout is not the half-way point, I finally got loose and comfy with my stride. Perfect - for at about 3 1/2 miles came the nausea, which I had for the next mile. A big thanks to a guy about my age who I came up on and started a conversation with me, and pushed me along.
Now - here's what I don't get. Felt like junk, yet my time was :41:33.70 (official - my watch said :41:30.84, and the finish line clock said :41:27.00 - go figger), which is my third fastest at this distance. I was pleasantly surprised with the results - this year in black, last year in (red):
Time :41:33.70 (44:58.90)
Overall 252-514 (309-466)
Male 192-317 (NA)
AG 7-16 (8-10)
I'm happiest with that last one. Usually a top ten means there's less than ten in the AG. But to get it with a top half in the group is a good race.
