Uggg....I don't know if it's physical or mental. I'm in really great shape right now, I've lost 20 lbs since Christmas and am working out and feeling really good.

But I just cannot seem to get back on track with my running. Before having Hayden I could do 6 miles for a long run and that's pretty much the longest I've ever run. Another baby later and I'm just stuck. I've been running consistenly since Avery was 2 months old (she's now a year) and I just can't seem to get over the 3 to 4 mile hump.

I'm running 4 times a week, with 2-3 runs being 3 miles and 1-2 being 4 miles. But even so, that 2nd and 3rd mile kill me. I usually stop for like 10 seconds somewhere in there and rest. Today I pushed it to do 4 and it was still so hard. I feel like I'm just at a wall. Shouldn't I be making more progress? Am I just not pushing through the pain enough and making the mental leap to do it???????????

I really really want to do a marathon (someday) but would love to try a half sometime in the next year. But I feel discouraged that I can't get my long runs longer.

Any suggestions? (I really try to be positive about my running and keep telling myself I can do it as I'm running, but it's not working great right now).

Thanks!

It's mental. If you've run 6 mi. in the past, then you can do it again.

You may need to slow down to get from 4 mi. to 6 mi, but you can do it.

A friend of mine that did an Ironman with a week's worth of bike training and no swim training (but lots of running) passed this gem on to me.

So you are saying I'm mental!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wink

So it's better to slow down, even though then I am running longer? I'm pretty slow already....I do about 6.1 mph on the treadmill and usually bump up the speed for the last .5 mile. So what would be a good speed to decrease to so I can work on longer runs? Should I still keep the same speed most days but slow down on the day I'm trying to run longer?

yes. i'd honestly try to do 5.5 miles at 5.5 on the treadmill. long runs are always paced slower. in fact, i wouldn't even worry about time now, just completing a distance and feeling good all the way thru. then, "bump up" the speed in increments for shorter runs once you get thru your goal long run a few times with no problem.

i'm probably conservative with the speed issues.

yes. i'd honestly try to do 5.5 miles at 5.5 on the treadmill. long runs are always paced slower. in fact, i wouldn't even worry about time now, just completing a distance and feeling good all the way thru. then, "bump up" the speed in increments for shorter runs once you get thru your goal long run a few times with no problem.

So just make a big jump from 4 to 5.5? And I guess if I slow down and just decide to do it.....I can! I try not to focus too much on speed anyway, and I guess I'm forgetting to slow down at all for the longer run. I just don't want to be a total slowpoke, you know! Wink But like that matters at this point!

if that seems like a big jump, let 5 be your goal, but do it at the 5.5 speed and see how that feels. you might be surprised at how the slower pace can take you further. do a rest day before the 5, that should help too.

Have you considered a vitamin deficiency? Are you getting enough protein and nutrients? I know, it's probably silly to ask.

Just having had a child--your body is using a lot to repair itself.
Make sure that this isn't your body's way of saying SLOW DOWN!!!

I feel like maybe I'm unstuck!!! I went for it, slowed down to 5.5 and did 5 miles today!!!!!!!!!!!! That was my goal, I wasn't going to not do it and as I was running I kept thinking "I'm doing 5 miles and get to post about it!!!!!" Dancing Banana I'm so excited! It's amazing what a difference slowing down made. I felt like a slowpoke, but I need to get over worrying so much about my speed. But really the first 4 miles were just not bad at all, and at 6.1, 4 miles has been HARD. The last mile I even upped my speed some and still finished strong.

I'm just so happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mr. Green cheers

aire, I have been slacking on taking my daily vitamin, so I'm going to get back on track with it every day. I don't really think I can use the baby excuse since it's been a year.... Wink

So should I stick with a long of 5 again next week or go up to 5.5? I actually could've gone another .5 today, especially if I wouldn't have bumped up my speed at the end. I'd like to be able to consistently do 6 miles as a long run and get comfy there. And then I can maybe "think" about training for a half (that's a good plan, right?).

Thanks for the help! Man, I'm so stoked right now!!!!!!!!!!!! Mr. Green

great job molly. Mr. Green

if you keep your other days as you say, you'd be fine going up to 5.5 for your long run, same lower pace, and your overall increase would be within that 10% rule...go for it. i'd keep it at 5.5 for a couple weeks and you'll hit 6 at that pace with no problem.

go girl!

Easiest way to get through a roadblock? Get off the dreadmill and get outside.
