I must add that the radio station I listen to in the morning, keeps a yearly tally of the number of mattresses and ladders found on the interstate.

Thats unusual...
We have similar problems with our roads, except, usually the items would be ON the roads, not conveniently put on the median. My mom was keeping a count of ladders she saw in the interstate. She lost count when she got into the 30s/realz. We also have a "Debris in the road hotline"
