...but you need to work on your emergency preparedness. As someone who lived through a mass evacuation (not 500,000 but we're Canadian and 30,000 souls are a big deal to us) you were not prepared for something of this nature.

iunno. well lets ontopic it...
i just want someone intelligent to talk to about this as i'm a bit baffled by some of the stuff going on.
i'm in absolutely no position to judge "emergency preparedness" but it's so upsetting to hear about some of the people causing problems.
when sept 11th happened it was unifying... now that it's a natural disaster and it's friggin "everything is free day at JC Pennys" or something.

Sorry. We were too busy re-electing a president who is waging a war against "The man who tried to kill his daddy" to work on an emergency plan.

Seriously, it has nothing to do with people and more to do with administration. The overwhelming sense I get from the news online is one of panic and disorganization amongst those in charge.

More than 1 million were warned in sufficient time to evacuate. A mandatory evacuation was ordered, but NO and the Gulf coast had about 36 hours to get out. Sure, alot of people stayed--some by choice. But "America" was able to warn people and had a road system in place to get 90 per cent plus out of the area well in advance of the storm.
Is anyplace in the world ready to handle a Cat 4 or 5 hit?

i'm not sure what kind of plan you would have to evacuate a whole city in case of a hurricane?
the head of our city's preparedness program is actually a good friend of the family... i'm willing to wager he's awfully busy at the moment. wouldn't mind hearing his take on it.
though i fail to see what more they could do right now? and i don't think the war has much to do with it all...

I guess the emergency I refer to is the one that's happening now, after the storm.

good call. some of those people were too damn stupid to leave. i know some of them couldn't (which is fair - albeit saddening), but the able bodied folk that didnt get out? i don't know what to say to that...

I think Americans need to draw on Canadians experience evacuating a metropolitan area of 1.4 million with a few hours notice of an impending category 5 hurricane.

ding.ding.ding... talked about this with someone earlier.
The line-up should be looonnng since they expect us to follow their lead with umpteen foreign crisises, let's see how many belly up to the table and help out the people that have put the millions in their pockets by buying the movie passes or albums or sports tickets.

It doesn't matter what force of nature threatens, you need to have a plan in place. And a cohesive plan I have yet to see.
