It all started out well. Weather's great. Running on the beach is fantastic. Great food. Family having fun. 6 days of glorious time off.
Then, Friday comes. I'm walking out into the surf with my 6yo, and the tide is up. As I'm wading out, I fail to realize that we've reached a sandbar, and my left foot strikes the slope with a not-so-good burning feeling in my ankle and foot. By dinnertime, it hurts to put weight on it.
Fortunately by Saturday, it improved enough to walk, with discomfort. The orthopaedist I saw Monday took an x-ray, which we both knew would be negative, but I have apparently done some damage to a ligament. My instructions are to exercise etc. "as tolerated". Temporary IR for me, unfortunately, at least a few days.
Unfortunately, my injured foot was the best thing that happened to me all weekend.
On Saturday, I traveled over to Miami for some business. After dinner, I'm driving out of downtown, and the driver in front of me is broadsided as he goes through an intersection. It's an absolutely hellacious crash. I stop my car, and go over to the car to see if I can help the driver who got the worst of it.
I pulled open the passenger door, and it's an absolute bloodbath. The guy is gasping for breath with the whole side of the car in on him. He's bleeding the worst from his arm and his side, and I tried everything to stop it, and nothing worked.
He was still alive when the paramedics got there, but he died before they could get him out of the car.
I'm so covered in blood when I get out of the car that the MFD got a jumpsuit for me. The paramedic who talked to me after it was all over told me I'd need to get tested for hepatitis and HIV since I got blood in my face, and some in my eye. I'm meeting with a doctor on Tuesday morning. The results from the Medical Examiner should be back on Tuesday as well.
As you can tell, I can't sleep. Please say a prayer for me and my family, and for the poor fellow who died on Saturday.

I guess we all think about what happens to people in these accidents, and that's why we all slow down. You witnessed it all first hand. That is one scary story, g. Take care of you and your family.

Wow. You are definitely braver than I am. Having lived through the blood test nightmare with The Paramedic a few times, I don't think I would've been eager to get near a bloody person, nonetheless touch him/her. Good luck and keep us posted.

How awful for you! But major, major kudos for stopping and trying to help, there are not a lot of people out there who would have. People just aren't like that anymore, sadly.
Fingers tightly crossed that all comes out well with the tests!! When will you know?

Thanks heavens no. I drove a rental from Captiva on Saturday morning and they stayed at the beach.
My wife is beside herself with anxiety.
