(the Poli Sci major from UW-EC makes his appearance to a smattering of applause and a preponderance of catcalls)

This is for real. There's a website that's trying to get as many people in this state to get Da Coach to run ( www.DraftDitka.com ). They figure about 10,000 repsondents would do the trick. And given the mentality of the average voter in Illinois it's dumb enough to work.

Obama, the Democratic candidate, is seen even further to the left than Illinois Senator Dick Durbin. Having Ditka in for the GOP means - instant name recognition, instant ability to raise funds, and the image of a everyday working man (huh? - I suppose as opposed to a lawyer, well, yes) in Washington. None of the other names thrown out for the GOP can match that.

As to being able to think on his feet and engage in debate on the Senate floor... my one and only encounter with Da Coach. He used to do a remote for a sports radio station at a hotel across the street where I work. He did this during the lunch hour. One day I was going through there to somewhere else, and had on a Packers sweatshirt. When I walked by, Ditka, without missing a beat and while talking on air, flipped me off.

Any man who can give me the finger under those conditions has my vote. Let the games (and laughs) begin!

The headline said "Some". I would question where the poll was taken. I'm guessing some sports bar around the corner from the Navy Pier.

You must be getting the feeds from the Chicago TV stations. You are right on target. Mr. Green

As could be expected, the Chicago media is touting him already as the star of the future for the Democrats, even suggesting VP or President in '08 (assuming a Kerry loss). Get him elected to the U.S. Senate first, huh?

And Jack Ryan still has not formally withdrawn as the Republican candidate. My guess is - you didn't back me up when the divorce info came out, screw you, I'm going to do all I can to throw the election to Obama. And that starts with my not taking my name off the November ballot.

I can see their point. Compare him to the previous 'face' of hte democratic party, Teddy, (or arguably the Clintons) and I think he's the younger newer image they would prefer to have. I was impressed anyway.

I'm as slow as the forums today, forgive me, but I don't understand the Ryun bit...he's still trying to get votes?

"A skinny kid with a funny name!"

Great speech last night. That boy got some 'ethos'!

Funny cuz when we were down at the St Patty's parade in Chicago this year that's all we saw was Obama signs all over the city. I see why he's so popular now...
