Hey Arnold!: a rich kid tries to beat Arnold at a boat race, and is shown to be obnoxious and rude, and arrogant. He is also dressed like a 19th century schoolboy who was just taken advantage of by the principal. his grandfather also has something up his ass too.

Rugrats: Chucky briefly becomes wealthy, and during this time, his father becomes a caricature of a yuppie, and for no apparent reason, begins to hate Tommy's dad who isn't as rich for no reason. Chucky also goes to a private school, and the kids are portrayed as evil bastage who dislike chucky with a fiery passion for no reason. And their really lazy. I mean, what kid needs an elevator to get to the top of the slide?

Amber, Ginger something like that: i was watching the opening sequence, and again, a rich child is portrayed as being malevolent and cruel, on more than one occasion within 30 seconds. I mean seriously, can you really make someone cry and piss their pants in that short amount of time?

So, why is every wealthy person in a nickelodeon a nasty character? I think it has something to do with maybe i have too much time on my hands so if you think that please ignore this thread.

Rich people are an easy target. It's not nice to pick on poor people.

Same goes for SUV drivers {Pebbles) and Southerners (me).

Jeff Foxworthy made an entire career out of picking on Southerners/Rednecks.

I consider myself an authority on the subject. Arnold is evidently a parentless kid who lives with his grandpa in an older, urban flat. His love interest, Hilda, has a dad who is a busines owner who's portrayed as a nazi. There was an episode featuring a kid who lived in a car. Age appropriate? I dunno. The anti-materialism message doesn't seem to carry over into the commercial content on those shows.

And don't get me started on Rugrats merchandising. The contempt for wealth doesn't apply to their licensing arrangements, evidently.

Mr. Krabs, on the other hand, is an affable, fun-loving, philanthropical, entrepreneur. Wink

Very interesting Prohemp!

That's also the case on Spongebob Squarepants. Although Mr. Krabs is not made out to be evil, he talks incessantly about his love of money and is always trying to cheat and trick people in order to get more.

my theory is that it is the democrats
seriously i reached a point where i can't watch a child's show without perceiving an underlying message that someone wants us to come away with.

Ever read the berenstein bears children's books?? the father is portrayed as a complete idiot - while the mother is portrayed as having all the smarts, common sense etc

I find that Italians are always a target (characters are always Jimmy Baga-donuts and squeaky bubble-headed women). no offense OB
Every commercial about italians is always the same.

Catholics (If I hear one more priest joke...)

Republicans (I am NOT rich, cruelhearted or greedy)

Did you even need to ask? Wink

Do you think it is for comedy purposes, or that there is an underlying message?

Even if it were for comedy purposes, there would be a backlash if they had made the mother character the stupid one, so naturally it would have to be the father.

Some people do not feel that we have reached gender equality yet. It is never safe to mock the underdog - only the group that has traditionally been on top, no?

i don't think you need to mock anybody to make a childrens book interesting - if you are trying to make reading the book a learning experience, why not take the opportunity to promote equality.

ever see the racial overtones in curious george??

I definitely agree, and if you read some of the more recently published children's books, I think there is a trend towards being more politically correct.

How so?

The thing is everyone discrimates on some level. Writers, comedians, all entertainers put a bias of some sort on their productions. There probably isn't a culture group out there that can't point to something and say "see, that offends me". I think people generally respect free speech and try to balance it with respect for all people in their daily lives. But when it comes to spending their money on television, movies, or the like, they make millionaires out of the folks that use themes of discrimination like running down the rich, or men, or Italians, that's when it really shows how discrimination runs through us all. Because money talks louder than words and many a hateful hollywood type have gotten a lot of money from a lot of people to be entertained by running somebody down.
