When changing the ballcock on your toilet, always, always remember to turn off the water supply first.
Corollary - You can never have enough towels when changing the ballcock on your toilet.

It's the unit that controls water flow. If you've got a float-version of these, it will have a long arm with a rubber float on the end of it. Typically installed on the left side of the tank.
I'm just hoping that I don't have to do the drywall behind the tank...it got pretty wet....

ah. that's the part i guessed (but failed to describe it - so i decided to let you do it).
yeah... turning off the water would've been a good call. sometimes our chain comes off (that lifts the plug to start the flush) and when you try to put it back on, you accidentally flush a few times...
