Garrett and I took a run up to Shirks bike shop this morning, which is up near Honeybrook PA, for anyone interested and I picked up a recumbent for $450, marked down from $650.
It's a little on the wobbly side until you get used to it, but after that it's quite a comfy ride, on both the joints and the soft parts.
Genie you can try it when you come over tomorrow to see how you like it.

Swass! Go, girl! I saw several 'bent riders at Tour de Corn...even a tandem 'bent! I got such a kick out of turning to the guy behind me in the late registrant line to say, "Hey, check out the tandem recumbent!" How often does one get to use those two words together?
My main concern/worry about the recumbent bicycle is visibility, especially in traffic. One fellow I saw had a tall (maybe five feet?) windsock/condom/pooltoy-like apparatus on the back of his bike. I tried to find a pic of it, but couldn't figure out the item name or manufacturer.
I saw another product that is essentially a thin sheath that covers the front of the bent and makes it enclosed. Sorry, words fail me at this weirding hour. I assume that its purpose is to enhance aerodynamics, but in the world of corn-country swirling winds, seems to me like trouble with a capital "T." I'm sure it's just fine -- but it wigged me out.

My camera wasn't working, so I couldn't get a picture of the bike
For those at home, here is what it looks like this, 'cept hers is black
I did try and ride, I found it a little awkward, but its something I could prolly get used too.

Wow... the E-bike. In the Intro to Design class I took a year ago, the author of the book was one of the designers for the bike. They used it as an example throughout the book. I thought it was a poor reflection on the quality of the book because I had never seen or heard anyone mention an E-bike ever. Way to go design process!

Just my two-cents, but I think a recumbent allows a cyclist to be more defensive. From an upright sitting position, my field of vision is so much greater than a typical upright bicycle where you are crunched over your handlebars and looking at the white stripe seems to be the most comfortable. But in a 'bent, it's looking straight ahead and able to see easily from side to side.
And as for visibility of other drivers, when I sit next to a biker in their aerobars, my head is at the same level. My body and bicycle are similar in mass. There really is little difference in the amount of what other drivers see. In fact, my wide seat back which is usually shrouded with my cycling pack is easy for drivers to notice when the approach from the rear. And if you've never seen a recumbent coming at you, again it's easy to notice what I call the "kicking machine" look as I'm my pedalling action is right out there in front of me and a person can't help but notice...especially with some colorful tights added

Excellent choice MW!!! Those BikeE's have a good rep and are the ideal "newbie" choice. Had you asked brands, I would've pointed you toward trying one.

I took it for a ride the morning of the BBQ on some varying terrain. The hills are going to be a learning curve for me, in that it was hard to maintain my forward direction while pedaling really fast.
That and the tendency to strong arm the steering column, which just makes you go all willy wags.
Other than that, I can say today that there is no hip pain from yesterday's 1.5 hour sojourn.
For visibility, I went the dork route and got the orange flag for day and an LED flasher for the early am and evening.
I'll probably take a little trip out to Lancaster Cty this weekend and bike the roads that have the "wagon" lane.

on the blinker, I use mine even during my rare daylight rides.
I would suggest a vest like the construction guys use, for an added measure of visability
