Actually, I was just on their website and I didn't see anything that suggested which ones to buy.

If you're thinking about moving further into DC, I'd look for bullet-proof ones.

I think Consumer Reports makes you pay for their reviews online.
Cosco and Graco are big big names.

For the first six months + baby will be in the 'bucket' style seat that faces backwards. After that, most of the major manufacturers make seats wtih adjustable/removable straps that convert to boosters once the kids are too big for a standard car seat. That way you only have to buy one! I think they're called 3 in 1 convertibles or something.

Which one does your auto insurance recommend?
I think USAA makes recommendations.

I was just reading Freakonomics and Levitt was saying that the difference between baby seats is not important enough to warrant purchasing the most expensive model on the market, and as long as you are following the other guidelines, like having the babyseat in the backseat facing the seat, you'll have the most important protection.
Keep in mind, however, that I only have a dog and that my views may be skewed.

We have some Graco thing that came with our stroller. The car seat comes out of the car with the flip of a single lever and snaps right into the stroller. Most people I see walking around with newborns have this kind of car seat these days.
It was a gift so I have no idea what it cost.

We bought the Graco Quattro travel system (http://www.gracobaby.com/catalog/product.aspx?modelNumber=7419LIM&CategoryID=2 when my daughter was born, and it has been great. The infant car seat is really easy to get in and out, and the baby was easy to get in and out of it. The stroller is rugged and folds easily. The really nice thing about the stroller is that you can raise and lower the basket to get stuff without adjusting the stroller back.
I find that the strollers with the travel systems are a bit bigger than, say, Peg Perego strollers, but they're really tough. And they're about $200 cheaper than a Peg stroller.
After using that car seat, we got a Cosco Alpha Omega Elite (http://www.dreamtimebaby.com/alomel3cocar.html. This seat has three settings: rear facing, forward facing, and booster. It's very adjustable, very easy to install. Some people complain about the buckle, but I've never had a problem with it. I have heard, however, that the leather version isn't worth the extra money....

We got the Graco Snugride for Hayden and now Avery is using it. We've been happy with it and no complaints. Good luck.

Cosco is owned by Safety 1st. Both are BAD BAD companies. Lots of accidents/deaths because of their products in the past. Don't buy their things. Period.
Check out this link on car seats at the CSPC.GOV website: http://search.cpsc.gov/query.html?qt=car+seats&x=16&y=13
I have both of the boys in a Britax. Jacob had the Roundabout from birth to age 4. Will is in the slimmer fit booster, Starriser, and Jacob is in their newer booster, cannot think of the name. I love Britax, although their seats are high-end. Peg Perego may be the only costlier seat manufacturer at this time.
Good luck. It is a big decision! Check that link I gave you though before moving forward!
