I know that this will come as no surprise to many who've read this post but it needs to be said: some men aren't very quick on the uptake in a situation such as this. In order to prevent this from going any further (and for future reference), honesty is the best policy.
So what if his feelings/ego/etc. are hurt? The longer it goes, the longer it hurts - both of you. Save yourself the hassle.
Had a ear pierced? The sharp, quick jab of the needle is more tolerable than a slow piercing would be. Quick and to the point. Bang! No appealing this sentence. Case closed.
