Pat Green lost me with "Wave on Wave." Not only that, a lot (not all) of current pop country has dumb lyrics that the artists singing don't even write, bad music they didn't write (and maybe don't even play) either and personas that rub me as being as contrived and marketed as the kids on American Idol. Particularly this latest breed of "rural" "down home" "farm" "pure American" artists, out of whom I'd bet you'd struggle to find many who've lived or had any part of the words they sing, yet are marketed so hard (and successfully) to small town Wal-Mart shopping middle America because they "relate" to these artists...because the lyricists dumb down their music to a perceived level of small town intelligence (5th grade?) to be "relatable." And these people don't really get the insult and buy into it all, perpetuating the cycle...Its a marketing machine. But maybe thats just me.

Actually, the previous cynicism applies to most pop music right now.

He was in Nashville for years and it didn't work out so he left and went to Minnesota or Montana (not sure) and landed a recording contract up there.

He has a hit song called Lipstick

He writes mostly about small moments in relationships.

Lipstick is about the moment in a relationship when you know it is going bad and you are like "we have to do something right now to change it." So.. the people in his story take an impromptu trip, one they had always talked about but never taken.

The words are

"you can put your lipstick on while I drive."

I love the song.

Look up the lyrics. Good stuff.

I trust WXPN for the most part to bring me stuff that I will like but very few of them will be played on mainstream radio and therefore played to death.

I agree. That's one reason I avoid any artist that has been hyped to death. If I hear their names over and over before I even hear their music, I've already lost interest.

One exception lately: I was watching the Tim McGraw retrospective on TV a few days ago--that boy can sing! He was singing some beautiful songs--not the crap they play on the radio.

I always liked Chris Ledoux for that reason. He was always on the fringe singing neat, soulful songs.
