just had a conversation about my parents and some assisted living place they want to move into "someday". Someday??? You're practically CHILDREN! Who needs assisted living??? You're barely drawing social security! Actually, I'm glad they are thinking about it now while everyone is coherent and healthy. But, I don't want to think about my parents getting old. /let me live in denial

Your parents ARE a lot younger than mine, and you're older than me... sounds like the beginning of "I am my own grandpa" no?

My parents are 76 & 79, live in their own home, and are vibrant. Though not recently, we've talked about the possibility of assisted living and know where that will be should it ever be necessary. It's a beautiful place where some friends from their church have gone... in Mars, believe it or not.
My maternal grandmother lived on her own through age 94. She moved from Columbus to Pittsburgh, into an apartment when she was about 80. She lived with my parents in her failing year & a half.

well, my dad is 82, bless his heart. still goes to downtown pgh twice a week for work, still bitches about the "ratrace", still plays golf 4x a week, and enters senior tournaments, still wears "spiderman" tshirts under his polo, still drives his lexus to florida for the winter, and sings karokoe in dive bars....he's thought about assisted living, i think his idea of assisted living is breakfast at mcdonalds and two other squares at the golfclub....i believe it could be worse but underneath it all, i think he's really kinda. lonely. assisted living would, at least, surround him with other people his own age although, for him, i'm not sure that would be a good thing in certain respects.
watching parents age is gut-wrenching. and yes, 60s are young; they've got lots of living to do pf.

I was recently approached by my parents about their wishes when they go. Apparently I'm the one they want to handle everything.
