I'm sorry to hear you didn't get it (and a generic letter is stinky!).
In my previous job, I was responsible for the first round of interviews for hiring in our department. At one point we had 15 new positions to fill. Although I conducted an interview about them, I also was responsible for selling the job to them. When I interviewed for my current job they did the same thing to me and I realized that that process made me feel like the job was mine.
Anyway, every once in a while I'd get a phone call from someone who didn't get a job and ask that I tell them why to help them in their next interview. I thought that was smart and classy and I usually pulled their resume in case we had more openings another time. Maybe you'd want to call those that interviewed you and tell them you're disappointed but curious what qualities/skills, etc. would have helped to get the position.

Sahara stole my suggestion. Whenever I've been job hunting, I'd always call back the places that turned me down to ask "What kept me from getting the job? If there's something I need to work on to improve, I'd like to know what." Since they already turned you down, there's nothing left to lose. I always got good feedback actually.
to ya Coach.. bring on the PE Bad Boy attitude.

to you for such a fantastic attitude! I think you are exactly right, what's meant to be will be. I think you listed some great reasons to stick it out another year my fave being the sweats part...why do you think I'm going into nursing? the scrubs, duh And this will give you the option to keep your eyes peeled for another opportunity, of course!
all around, indeed!

Sorry to hear the news, Coach. At least things aren't terrible where you are at. Maybe next year!
