... the most recent Supreme Court ruling, but that'd be too political.

So instead, what's your favorite color?

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court today upheld a federal law that requires public libraries to install Internet filters on their publicly accessed computers.

We can keep it civil. Yay or Nay on the filter decision?

So they made two decisions today? On this one I vote yay. Their computers, their rules.

And for the record, my favorite color is black. In case y'all couldn't guess.

It didn't get a 20 point bump on its score as your favorite, did it? Wink

Edited to add the winkie thing.

Nay. Libraries have quietly protected our rights to free speech and access to books that have been banned in the past. Who determines what is blocked and what is accessed? I guess I have a problem with the "required" part. Perhaps what is needed is some voluntary policing at the library: a bank of computers for minors that is filtered, and a bank of comps that are not filtered.

An outright ban on the sites whose material was "objectionable" would have had the effect of limiting free speech. That's not what happened. Merely limiting access to those sites at a library prevents no one from browsing those sites privately elsewhere. Free speech is not the same as a free computer.

Nay. I filter my own thoughts and actions and p0rn thankyouverymuch. I don't want a library's board or a little ole lady in a bun doing it for me or for those who can not afford a computer let alone Internet access. Internet access is not a right, but in a day and age when information is found at the library, public libraries that have computers should have uncensored computers without filters. If a library is privatized (like in a parochial school) by all means feel free to filter.

Anyone can set up a dirty web site in this country. That's free speech. But the taxpayer is not obligated to give people computers to view those sites.

This is no more an abridgement of free speech than banning prayer meetings at public libraries limits freedom of religion.
