The cat POOP stench, now that's another story. |
i'm just sayin....cats may be easier than a dog in that they do not need to be "let out" and watched outside, walked outside, whatever....but cats are not,by any means, a maintenance free pet. having two cats, i clean their poo box twice a day, every day. there's no other way it works. a cat will become depressed if its poo box is left uncleaned, not to mention the stupid pet owner who complains of their house stinking of cat pee but hasn't touched the litter box in three days????? wtf???? i brush one of my cats, almost daily, to prevent hairballs and the subsequent hurl of the hairball which can take up to 5 days to clear from her intenstinal tract....but when it does, i swear it looks like a damn rat lying there on the floor. most cats hate living outdoors and most pet owners believe it's perfectly alright to shove kitty outside at night. wrong.
do not think that a cat is maintenance free, it isn't. some cats are driven nuts by being left alone all day too. oliver would be insane and clinging to a wall, like a fly, if i'd leave him alone all day, every day. he simply couldn't cope, there are many cats like this. people have a misconception that cats are independent distant creatures; i believe this is only because they have, at one time, been abused or neglected by an azzclown and have found avoiding the human race to be the best thing for their well being and survival.
a cat's personality is what a person has shaped it to be...sometimes it can be undone and changed but, for the most part, a cat is at the mercy of the first owner it has and it's little kitty psyche is forever shaped accordingly.

1 to all of RR's comments but particularly this section. I think shelter animals can be WONDERFUL pets in good loving homes, it can be a win-win situation. Just be sure you can provide the good loving home side of it before you commit to 14-20 years with someone. Its very worth it if you can.
Also re: oliver, I had to get a 2nd cat because my first cat was MISERABLE at home alone all day. Miserable. My current cat would be too if we moved away from my roommate's cat, they are best friends.

Yikers, now I have to get TWO????
That's a good point, Cheryl... a lot of my cat owning friends say that the best thing is to get two kittens together so they keep each other company (or so the one has help in destroying your house ) because it is sometimes tough to bring another cat in after one's already been there....that alpha thing is not only for dogs apparently. Matt's original cat would NOT take kindly to intruders and the kitten we had found, he ended up beating up and we had to give it to his sister. I liked the kitten way better than him, too.
Well, I called the shelter. Apparently that website hasn't been updated in quite a while so the likelihood of her still being there is slim to none, although they have "a ton of other cats to choose from." They are part of the animal hospital in Frazer but most of the cats do not live there, they are either being foster parented or live with the director (her house must smell great ), so it was back to square one til yesterday.
My cow-orker's MIL apparently found a cat a few months ago but she's old and can't keep him. I've now been sent pictures and assured that he's very friendly, nondestructive and would make a wonderful pet. He IS cute, and only about a year old, so I am thinking about it. I already have a name picked out..... I'm going to think about this for the weekend, he lives in Harrisburg so it'd be a bit of a road trip for the cat to come here and I am worried about uprooting him again since he's comfy with her, although he does have to go eventually and she doesn't want to take him to a shelter.
Decisions, decisions......
