Wow. I mean, wow.
Such emotion for a television show...
You know, there are some people, aware of your hashing habits, who would recommend that you get a life. ("Get a life, get a life, get a life, life, life...") But, now? If they were ever on the fence about it, they're now off. It's official.
Stunned? On your feet, cheering?

My problem is getting Mr. Manilow involved. Not that he's coming into this unprepared - his current release of 50's songs is doing well. It's the whole him/Clive Davis/Arista Records thing - too many hands in the AI pie. Arista has always been a weak label - pop and schmaltz. What forays they've made into other genres have been train wrecks. And they're going to wreck whoever wins out here. Of all the successes on AI, once in awhile, I will hear Kelly Clarkson on the radio. Occasionally. All the others - nada.

Um, it may be too late. It seems that there are some very perceptive people perusing the posts....

Bob Dylan - All Along The Watchtower
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
 | I don't like a lot of his stuff, but I'd even put in the Dave Matthews version of Watchtower.

You'd mentioned that, sometimes, the cover is way better than the original, even when the cover isn't note-for-note. That was why I used Hendrix's version of Dylan's song. Umm, quite a bit different, eh? But is it better? DMB's cover is closer to the original. But I still like it, too.
I agree with you: you can mess with a "classic" and - maybe - make it better.
