I know, I know, reversing a thread idea is soo yesterday, but let's put the opposite spin on the topic. Yes, this country is in an obese sprial with plenty of couch potato diseases outta control. But you know what? The role we can play is simply doing what we're doing. Getting out there, moving some miles behind us, keeping the spare tire at bay, and being an example, in whatever degree you choose, of better fitness.
A couple months back I bumped into a buddy I hadn't seen in a year's time. He told me he was taking on a new fitness regime and an email story I had once sent him (the Old Man Died, some of you might remember) was taped square in the middle of his mirror. Anyway, the bottomline is somewhere along the line, I've got to believe, each one of us is going to have positive impacts on others being healthier.

You are always the voice of reason! Very true, and I guess maybe venting here is just our way of voicing the frustration, at least when it has to do with people we know personally, of not being able to help more or having to stand by and watch people ruin their health.
Sidebar: that is one of my all-time favorite of Michael's writings! When's the last time we posted it here?

It is true and we can really only control our own lives so why not get out there and show people how great they can look/feel?
Accountability starts at home. Hubby and I have made the changes we needed to and are darn proud of it.

I am not familiar with the Michael-old-man thing of which you speak.....can someone post it again?
But I agree jrjo, I have already seen some of the impact I've had on some friends and co-workers. I've had 4 co-workers take up running because of me and about 10 friends and my mom to take up cycling because I did. And, coolest still, my really overweight friend I mentioned in the first thread that I am concerned about, she came to cheer me on in my half marathon in January and mentioned that she was so inspired she wants to try running again (she used to run when she was pretty young) and asked me to help her try and get to a 5k, which I was very excited to help her do. I think you are right though, leading by example is very powerful, and on the reverse of that, imitation is one of the sincerest forms of flattery.

it's a hard lesson to learn that we can only control ourselves. this one is very difficult for me for a number of reasons: According to a personality test I've taken, i'm a high influence/dominance kind of person. i believe that I can change the world and will attempt to do so at any opportunity. I become extremely frustrated when I am not able to change things that I think I should be able to change. A lot of my Eating Disorder is about control, and when I feel that I am losing control of certain situations, the eating disorder kicks in. Like i said, it's a difficult lesson to learn. I'm getting better at it, but I have a long way to go.
On the other hand, too many people don't realize that they have as much control as they do. They simply give it up. These are the people who blame others for their poor situation. "It's not my fault I'm fat. It's McD's for serving such fattening food."
so yes, I'm sure we serve as examples and inspiration to others. I just wish we had more influence with that, and that more people would take responsibility for themselves.
