** Edited because I broke the rules...
Currently in Austin it is 25, with a wind chill of 12. Sleet and freezing rain is coming down and has been since 5:30. The roads have at least an inch of ice on them. Not snow, but ice.
Safe to say, I am at least getting a two hour delay However, the high tomorrow is expected to be 38 with more rain. By Wednesday it will be back up to 50, so this is very short-lived stuff. But the ice is taking down powerlines and closing the highways and interstates.
In case you were wondering, yesterday we had a high of 75 and sunshine

No lobbying tomorrow. At least a delay. Enjoy the extra rest Alan.

Isn't it amazing how a little bad weather will cripple a city that's not used to it?

Well, I guess if we all kept chains for our tires or ice tires we could make it. The roads are covered with about an inch of ice. They have sanded and salted the main roadway, its the getting out of your driveway and down the street that is the main problem.

Actually ph, do you remember when they closed metro and suburb schools last year because of the threat of snow that never came?
What an embarassment.

Who makes these decisions anyway? People from the Bahamas?

They are just dump trucks with an attatchment. No big deal. Rather than asphalt they just load them up with a sand/salt mix they keep in reserve just for days like today..that happen about once every three years.

School superintendents, I believe. Once one goes, though, it's like dominoes. The 'snow panic frenzy" as my wife calls it.
I laugh at the newscasts that always throw up the graphic of "Storm Watch 2003" before they give the weather. Nothing like the feeling of impending death from 20 degree temperatures, I say.

Rain is a double-edged sword around here. The land loves it, the reservoirs need it, but most folks hate it because you can't move in it. Too many people think rain means drive faster. The freeways and byways just get clogged up with dorks who play a mean game of bumper cars.
