| email I just got wrote: | Please do not plug the small heaters into the computer power strips. They can cause electrical problems with the computers. Also, please do not place the small heaters so that the heat is blowing on the PC tower (the CPU). This can cause overheating for the PC.
Finally, make sure that all radios, cell phones, etc., are placed as far away as possible from the CPU and monitor. The can cause display problems, i.e., static, flickering, etc. |
Good advice I guess, but common sense you'd think. Do the computer gurus in your office dole out this kind of stuff??

Once when I worked for the County 911 during a major blizzard. Our director plugged in a space heater and blow out all the power to the building except the critical circuts that ran the 911 computer systems.
We had no heat in the building and we had to have food shipped in because of it.
It was a big on his part. We all got a laugh about it later too. The problem with the electrical system was fixed so we always had power no matter what mother nature or directors did.

Maybe if they turned the heat up a little bit they wouldn't need the space heaters

I would even argue no one needs a space heater in Houston, Texas, I mean, really. They keep the A/C on full blast year round.
Of course this week, my steroids are giving me hot flashes so my heater hasn't been on in a while.

I work in IT Jrjo and you wouldn't believe the common sense things people don't know or follow. Remember, when sending e-mails like this they are speaking to the lowest common denominator.

I'm a trainer for a small software development company, so we're all IT. You wouldn't believe the number of times THIS WEEK ALONE I've had to explain the difference between email's Reply v. Reply to All. Or the difference between Save v. Save As.
I even had to explain the purpose of a compiler to the programming staff.

My roomie works in IT and he is always bringing home good stories about the stupid people he has to deal with. What cracks me up is that the group he supports is largely made up of Harvard and Wharton MBA's!!
