Posted: 03/24/03 - 11:14 Post subject: INJURED LIST!!!
I pulled a bonehead move yesterday. Went for a run with Running Brewer and decided to wear my new shoes, mainly because I have an ingrown big toe on my right foot, and my normal shoes rub against it, whereas the new ones do not. Only problem is, I haven't broken the new ones in yet.
About a mile or two into our 4-miler, both of my legs hurt from hips to heels. Got done with the run and was quite sore, but it wasn't until I got home that I could hardly walk on my left foot. It feels almost worse this morning.
Can anyone help me with what I have, what I can do about it, and how long I'll be sidelined? The pain is on the outside of the bottom of my foot, near the middle. I was thinking P.F., but it doesn't seem like the right spot for that. Inflamed tendon, maybe? Anyone?! I've already paid for the half at Madison, and I really need to get my butt in gear, so this doesn't help my cause. Thoughts would be appreciated...

Randy,
my advice is rest until pain free. I often run in new shoes to break them in on short runs. 4 miles isn't very far, could this be the beginning of a larger problem?
When you are pain free, start running again, and then take a realistic assessment of how you feel. If the pain returns, you need to wait some more, if you feel good, start your program up again.

Sorry to hear that. Did you change brands? A 4 miler on the same brand shouldn't cause that much pain.

Same brand, different model. I had been running in the 2001 Adidas Response. These new ones are the 2003 Climacool Response. The cushioning does seem a little different.
I'm beginning to think it was from poor stretching and maybe a bad step here or there that spurred it. I never get foot injuries, so I think it is a freak thing. I will wait until pain free, and probably do a couple of miles in my old shoes (they only have about 50-100 miles on them, so they should be fine) and see if the pain returns. Then I'll go from there.
Thanks, guys. Every word helps!

When you say ingrown big toe, are you saying the toe points inward? I know you underpronate, right? So the pain on the outside of your left foot could be from overcompensating from staying long on your right foot. Did you do this run on pavement? As you're recovering from an ache like this, I'd stick to grass, trails, or gravel. Getting pain from hip to heel sounds like some tough pounding to me.

I had similar issues with the switch I made to another NB brand, which was more cushioned but less stability prone--and it was definitely the shoes.
DEFINITELY wait til the pain is gone before you try and run again. Like you and everyone else told me, one race is not worth risking further injury and longer time on the bench.
When you say hip to heel, is the pain down the back of your leg or on the side where your foot hurts?

I meant ingrown toenail. But that's getting better. Yeah, I underpronate a bit, but not much. But, you are right, it was pavement, and now that I think about it, alot of it was slanted to the right. I've only run that course once previous, so that could be a great point! I will probably do my recovery on the treadmill. Doesn't get much safer than that.

I think that pain was due to my week off more than anything, and I had only run outside twice prior. Not worried about the rest of the pain at this point.

Randy, this happens to me after running on a tread. Haven't you been running primarily on the tread? New shoes are so frustrating. I have some really good exercises for plantar faciitis if you want them PM me.
Are you stretching well? Take the first mile slow, stretch, and then run. Good luck to you! Sidelining is heinous awful.

As Coach said, 4 miles is a good distance to break in a pair of shoes. And since you're wearing a similar model to your older ones, I think you can rule out the shoes being the problem.
I would think your pain could be caused by two things:
1. Running on canted pavement for a longer distance after taking a week off.
2. Overcompensating for the pain of the ingrown toenail on your right foot.
3. Or possibly, a combination of both.

Well, I thought it was getting better. But, it isn't. Probably hurts more now than it has yet. I am going to have a Doc look at it. Tracy thinks it could be a stress fracture. That's not good, right? I am very unhappy...
