I usually try to estimate the cost of everything in the basket before checking out. Within a dollar is my goal. Today my guess was $20, and the total was $20.02.
Yeah, I'm easily amused.

I'm usually within a dollar or 2 also. DH is really impressed by this. However, finding where the car is parked outside the store is always a mystery to me.

When I did it, I was usually within 5 bucks or so. I usually added the things in my head as I went along

Your head is always spreadsheeting. | which explains why your DH is always shocked when you do it.

I add it up in my head also as I go along, usually rounding things and guessing at the amount of tax. I'm usually within $5 on a $70 dollar total.

I'm not allowed to get near the checkbook when we go to the grocery store.

I just randomly throw things in my cart. Then at the checkout if I've spent too much, I start rooting through my bags for things to take off.
The rest of the people in line love me. HEY! It's WAL-MART! That kind of behavior is expected!

Neither am I. I volunteer to do grocery duty all the time, but I'm never allowed.
Grocery executives love me. "Let's try this!" is my favorite phrase at the grocery store.

When my Mrs gets back from grocery shopping, and I ask her how she spent, she usually asks me if I have my nitro handy
