Looking for this mythical beast called a sports doctor, who will work with someone when they are HEALTHY to help keep them that way.

I'm 290lbs and dropping. Dropped 32lbs so far and more to go. Well, my normal General Doctor is just about useless.

thoguhts on how to find someone?

Where are you located? I found a guy in Atlanta that I really liked (except that he talked too fast).

Best to get references. Contact a local running or bike club and see if anyone has any recommendations.

What kind of advice are you looking for? You may not need a doc.

Well, I'm 290lbs down from 322. 5'9". Trinewbie (2 sprints done this year, 3 more this year!). This is my 30th week as a retired coach potatoe.

I've had a variety of issues, some of which perhaps a good coach maybe, but stuff like getting a more precise Max HR. VO2 Max. BMR. I'm a numbers geek and I can't seem to find someone to help fufill my addiction! Mr. Green

Also, and probably the REAL most important thing is to give me some better guidance in sorting out INJURY from NORMAL "growing" pains transitioning into an athletic lifestyle.

Then, of course, the occasional injury and what I call, pre-injuries that come with the territory of being such a big guy and doing so much work. Example- 2nd Tri, I bolted out on the run like a bat out of heck and followed the pack. DUH. Bad move. I know I cannot run on a right-cambered road. My right ankle is weaker (dunno why) and if I run for even a minute I'm gonna feel it. So my right ankle cramps (or hurts?) and left shin does the same. I basically am stuck with a SLLLLLOW walk. Stretching doesn't help. But, experience has told me, walk through it (slow down!) and it'll go away. 25 minutes!! later it did and I was able to resume a semi-normal pace. AFTER, my right ankle was WEAK. Left shin perfectly fine. So sorting out NORMAL from Pre-Injury from Injury in a case like this is beyond me. And beyond my current Doctor.

Figuring out WHY my right ankle is like that, and fixing it is another.

Figuring out WHY I also bloody cramp during the run phase of a Tri (electrolytes? Stetching? Stress?).

Stuff like that... sorry to ramble, but I want to MAXIMIZE the return on my workout time without getting hurt (which will hurt in the long run!)

Any advice appreciated!

It sounds like you would be better off with a coach. If this is not feasable, a few good training books will help. Like Running Injury Free.

For biomechanical issues you might want to see a sports massage therapist. I have been going to an ART - Active Release Therapist that has fixed a bunch of problems. Here are some providers in Chicago and most of them are Doc as well.

Thanks will def. explort the massage therapist. Fond one I really like, but he is having his own issues and out of commission for a while. Trying a new one thursday.

I agree, I'd love to find a coach. Being a "Clydesdale" it seems to have dramatically reduced the field though. So far the 3 coaches I've talked to were so wrong for me it wasn't funny. Maybe just 3 bad ones in a row, but all 3 didn't listen. I explained my current fitness levels and goals and EVERY SINGLE ONE immediately started laying out a running plan which included 3-4 runs/wk each 2-4 miles. HELLLLLOOOO I can't run even 5 minutes in a row right now. Still gettin' there!! Jeesh.

Also, what do you guys think about (3) coaches? Swim, Bike, Run - separate humans? I've been looking for all in 1 and perhaps that is too much to ask for. Got a great swim coach, was thinking of going to some spin classes for bike, and maybe then I just focus on a RUN coach for remedials?

I guess I am talking out loud here. Curious to see what others think?

WHAT A TRIP! I went to the link and dropped in my zip. The FIRST guy who came up is a guy who we've invited to speak at our multisports club on wed (I'm a founding director of the club so I'm helping organize speakers).

AWESOME. I think I may chat his ear up on Wed!

As an ex-clyde, I can relate to a bunch of issues you are problably having. And, at 6'2" I'll never be "average" 150 lb runner/triathlete. I like tris because I can't run more then 4 days either without getting injured.

I can put you in touch with my coach. She uses an extensive interview process to design a program for your fitness level and goals. I think you need one that can manage your whole program vs 3 specific sports. Since she is an on-line coach I do attend clinics for some sport specific evaluation; but, I have not seen this as a drawback.

I started working with her after a car accident and have seen steady improvement over 18 months. I have two friends that have since started using her as an on-line coach and have seen great results. No pressure, just another option.

PM me for more details or questions.
