My dishwasher has finally gone kaput. It's time to buy a new one. Any suggestions on how to buy one? There seems to be pretty wide variety of prices ($150 - +$1000).

My best suggestion is to look at the "Consumer Reports" analyses. We've had a Maytag Dishwasher for about 10 years now and not had one bit of trouble. Biggest factor in choosing (to my mind) is the noise levels these things generate. Be sure to look for pleny of sound deadening materials around the unit.

I've found that the less bells and whistles they have, the better. If you can, save the old sound deadening insulation from your old dishwasher and add it to what comes with your new one.

One of the nice features in ours is a delayed start (4/6/8 hours). We generally set it up to run overnight

We just bought one last week. Got a Whirlpool Quiet Partner III. I like it so far, just installed it on Friday. I wouldn't buy the cheapest model out there, we had one when we moved in here and I thought it sucked. I like the delayed start, the adjustable racks and the quietness. It cost $450 which is more middle of the road, but the more expensive ones didn't have any more to offer IMO. Of course I had to have the Bisque color that they didn't have in stock, so I had dishpan hands for a week.
MADGE!! I SOAKED IN IT!!

I agree, Maytag makes some of the best appliances out there, and there dishwashers are great. As far as bells and whisles, the delayed start is a must have in my book.

I've gone thru a few dishwashers and I demanded Maytag this time. However, i don't think this one is as good. I swear I had one that scaped the dishes for you. The clerk was trying to talk me into a Bosch. My whirlpool got moved to the cabin, hated it and it was one year old

One of our primary criteria is a silverware rack on the door! Amazing how many more dishes you can load if it has this feature.

We bought a Maytag a few years ago. It washed dishes great but wasn't as quiet as we'd like.

Does that clean the silverware very well?
My mom has a dishwasher with one of those and IMHO the silverware doesn't get cleaned as well.

Delayed Start & Quiet Machine are two of the key features I will be considering. But how do you analyze how quiet the machines are when they aren't "working" in the store?

Works just fine as long as you dont load something flat in front of the rack blocking the water spray.
