The average Winnipeg wedding costs about $25,000-30,000. If you were to have the same wedding in Toronto, with the same details, focus, quality and calibre, it would be anywhere from $50,000-80,000. |

I had a cousin get married in the park in a pair of jeans. They're still married.
They probably spent $200-400.

We got married in the AF chapel, made our own food, my dress cost $150 and the cake was $100.
We're still married almost 17 years later.
Our rings were plain gold bands that cost $80 each.
What I'm saying is you can go simple and it still means as much as spending 15k on it like some.

We spent $450. And it was only that high cause we splurged on a limo ride to and fro.

aire - that's cool. i'm not sure what the g/f would say. we're trying to cut back on other things so we can have a nice fete. i'm just setting up my budget for the year, and i kinda slotted away 5 grand as a starting point...
its just awfully deflating to see people racking up huge costs like that. i guess i'll have to work on finding some good prices, so we don't have to give up too much.

...we did the church thing, sit down reception, cake, photographer, formal/tuxes, the whole traditional thing and still kept it under a grand.
Oodles of $ doesn't prove anything in my book..
The way I wished we'd have done it was how some friends of ours had a sunrise-ceremony on a pebbly shore of Lake Superior and then a breakfast reception. It was uber cool and completely done by 10am

jrjo - that sounds pretty cool (the lake idea). it's not that the $$ proves anything, but i think the DW would like a nice wedding... try to think that she worked at a lavish golf club for 6 years, serving at these weddings. (we also might be able to get that club and a decent price because we'd still know enough people there to get sponsored).
i think alot of people probably go over board - for all i know the stuff we want might not even cost that much. i'm just trying to figure out what to expect... i reckon we need to make a list of some of the specifics we want, and try to get an idea of what that costs, figure out what we want to spend, and see if we can make it work.

other fun facts --
after marriage,
i have to be able to make mortgage payments, food, car payments, etc, for myself and the g/f.
so, even if i save up the money for downpayment and the wedding, i'll probably need another year of savings to comfortably hit the road and not have to worry if i lose my job while she's finishing school.
oh, and i'll probably have to help finish paying for school.
well, at least i can say we could engaged next summer...

To be perfectly honest those numbers look low for the "traditional" production, if thats what your future wife chooses to do. Again, I think it should be personal to what you guys want and if what you want is a casual ceremony or a $30K+ soiree is up to you.

Which is why you should keep living with the 'rents. Save the $$.
However, you don't have to have an expensive wedding to have a nice wedding, or a great marriage. Small and intimate is just as good as inviting everyone you know or are related to, maybe even better in some families. Make it your day, all about the two of you and what you want and a stepping stone to the rest of your lives.
Renew your vows in 10 or 20 years and then spend big money on a reception. That would be cool, if a big shindig is what you need.
