Just my $.02 but I think it's foolish for new or returning runners to pick a race as long and grueling as a half marathon as their goal w/o at least somewhat mastering the shorter distances. I don't think 4 months is a long enough time for a new or return runner to build a base to properly race a half.

so how long is long enough? what sort of base do you think someone should have?

I think 25mpw for a good 8-12 weeks before beginning a training schedule for a half.

that makes sense....i have been actually run/walking 3 or 4 miles a day about 4 days a week since january...just not following any sort of plan, the whole point of signing up for a half for me, is to make sure that i am not skipping because of the kids, or other excuses. I have been running since 2002, but in 2004 i got pg and couldnt even walk while i was pg, i would cramp up really bad, and then in 2005, i was so busy with him, i think i started exercising again in the fall of 2005, just some walking, a little running, i have been building up so slowly......like i said, i was getting a bit lax and didnt think i was seeing much improvement, but i just havent been pushing myself.....

My first race was a half (Long Island, 1992). I think I did it in 2:07 or so. I was running on-and-off from May '91 (when I quit smoking) until Jan '92 when I got on the scale and decided I had to get serious.

So, four months of up to about 25 mpw, with a long run up to 12 miles. I didnt follow any specific training plan, just running 3 or 4 times per week with a long run on the weekend. Was I competitive? No, but that first race got me hooked on racing; I had a blast.

Now I was 24 at the time - if I was starting out now I'd take a lot longer to build up. But littlemary is a returning runner I'm sure she knows how to listen to her body, etc. I see nothing wrong with her plan for a half.
