Posted: 05/23/03 - 10:07 Post subject: How goes the training?
Just wanted an update from everyone on how their running/training was going.
Cycling :: Going good. Just started a 12 week program that focuses on climbing. GA is all hills, so this ought to pay off big time for me if it works.
Running :: Lately, sucky. Took off a week for tendonitis and missed a week when my wife had surgery. My easy pace has slowed down about 20 sec./mile and I'm only averaging 35 MPW for the year.
Lifting :: Going OK I guess. I'm cutting back a little so I can focus more on running and riding. Doing less weight and more reps. I'm happy with where I'm at right now only because I didn't set very high goals.
Swimming :: I called the Y yesterday and the new indoor pool is supposed to open on June 1st. Can't wait to get back into that and do a few triathlons.
Eating :: OINK OINK! I'm tired of eating, it seems like that's all I ever do when I'm not riding or running.

Running:: quite sporatic, but it's getting the job done, for the most part. No injures right now, so that's a huge plus. I think I'm ready for the half after a few long runs the last couple of weeks.
Lifting:: non-exitent right now. I do want to work in some weights for my next race. Nothing big, just some easy arms.
Eating:: I always eat a lot. It's in my genes, I guess. If I really wanted to cut back, I think I could, but I just don't feel like it.
Drinking:: I've been drinking a lot less beer over the last few months. I think taking that break over Lent helped my mindset a lot. I've also switched to more wine, less beer when I do drink. I'm afraid that may change a bit this weekend, though.

Running:: My hip hurt so I took off a couple days last week. This week has been okay and I seem to be following my schedule. My legs are feeling it though. My quads which I think are weak are sore and they are always sore on my long runs now. I guess they will get stronger.
Lifting:: I really have enjoyed lifting weights and being able to see the difference in my muscles. Haven't quite figured out how to fit the running and the weights together and still have time at home.
Eating:: I have been working on my diet. I have been trying to get more protein as it was very light after I started tracking my food with Fitday. And I haven't figured out how many calories I need to eat?! I have lost a couple pounds but really just want to drop bodyfat and my scale said my BF was the same as with the couple pounds then for the last week my weight stayed the same. So I don't know if I'm not eating enough or still too much or what.

Swimming: pretty consistant. 3xwk for about 5,500 - 6,000 yards total. Will be added more yardage when training for the 1/2 IM kicks in.
Biking: Still stuck in monsoon season Adding some tempo and hill work.
Running: continue to build milage and add speed work, tempo, fartlek etc.
Lifting: slim to none over the summer
Eating: never ending struggle to get the right foods. Our cafe is lucky to serve only 1 non-fried dish per week. I will probably start heading out to the salad bar for lunch.

Running: Well I may actually be able to run again in few weeks but this year has been quite disappointing thus far. I haven't run since April 13th. Before that I was kicking butt!!!
Lifting: I have put all my effort into lifting and doing physical therapy so this is really coming along. I can see the changes already. I have also been working on my stability muscles so that when I can run again I iwll have much better form.
Eating: This isn't really an area of concern. I have cut my calories quite a bit since being injuried and I am maintaining my wieght pretty good.

Running: Was great, minor foot problems have hampered my running a bit but after the race on Sunday I'll take some extended time off and focus more on my biking.
Lifting: 3 times a week...all upper body. Going great!
Eating/Drinking: Awesome! Made a commitment to eat more fruits and veggies and I've stuck to it. I eat a banana and an orange every day and assorted veggies as well. Because of training I haven't drank much AT ALL.

Eating: everything in sight, thank you.
Running: Well, when I started running (Nov '02) I wanted to be able to run 10k in time for the big race (Okanagan Int'l Marathon, 10k, half mary, full mary) in Oct. Now I'm running my first 10k tomorrow and hoping to be able to do the half in Oct, so I"d say training is going OK
I've been running by myself a lot lately (hubby's working two jobs) so I hope that's not going to turn into a motivational issue once my runs get longer.
I set out every night not knowing how far I'm going to run and let my body tell me how far we're going. The route I take breaks into 5.5k, 8k, 9k, 10k, 11,5k, and 14k (never made it this far yet) so the possibilities are endless. It really seems to work for me.

cycling: its slowed down significantly, my actual outside riding may be on hiatus through the heat of the summer. There are a few organized rides I'd like to do later in the summer, then maybe the fall San Antonio to Corpus Christi MS 150 in October....we'll see if I have time/get ready for it. In the meantime, occasional trainer work or spin classes for cross training ~once a week.
running: really starting to feel good. I'm improving tremendously now that my asthma medications are finally right (in the past week I'm having the best 'peak flows' I've ever had ) I'm speeding up just because I'm feeling human again, its amazing how much you really need oxygen! I'm still not fast, but thats not my concern right now. right now I'm on a mileage building program, then will train hardcore for the jan. houston half mary again. I hope to trim a good 30 minutes off my time from this year, but as long as I stay healthy that shouldn't be hard.
lifting: um, whats that? I know, I know, I'll go to the gym...
swimming: yeah...um...I haven't seen my speedo or goggles in a while....
eating: while not being able to breathe I was tending to eat crappier....I am now doing a lot better but can always improve (what food group to raisinettes go in?)

Running: Going ok. I'm on week 3 of an 8 week "how to run a 5k faster" program. I've followed it to the letter, and I'm not hella-sore after my weekly speed workout.
Lifting: I took a long break over the winter, but I've been at it again for about 2 weeks now.
Eating: I've cut back on some of my snacking at work.
Biking: I'm trying to bike more to get ready for my 30 mile donut run. But not as much as I should.

Running: Going great. I recently set a 5k PR on a killer hard course. I took 2 weeks easy and now I'm in the strength/endurance building phase of my next goal of setting a 10k pr at the end of July. I'm around 40 mpw and I hope to build up to 50. I found a great new trail to run on. Also, I'm pretty confident I'll set another 5k PR (on a flat course) before my 10k race. I also set some long term running goals for myself. I'm currently reading Glover's New Competitive Runner's Handbook. I have also become active in my local running organization.
The good news is that I got a Coolmax / mesh running cap and it freaking rocks my face off. The bad news is that I LOVED New Balance 854s and the new 855s feel very different to me - in a bad way.
Lifting: Like akern, I took a break late in the winter. I didn't start back up in the Spring because I was near the peak of my training pyramid for the 5k and felt that weights would just make me tired. But I'm back now. I've included legs more this time around - my achilles just loves those calf raises. I might even go buy a stability ball so I can have abs like akern and flarunner.
Biking: Huh? :
Swimming: Colorado is in the 4th year of a drought, so the creeks have all dried up.
Eating: I now weigh under 170 and have a BMI of 21.2. That is like a 15 pound difference from the last 10 year average, and I was never ever considered fat. So I'm watching myself closely. I have seen firsthand that Weight = Speed and I don't want to get an ED just so I can run a fast race time. If I ever drop to 160, then I'll eat fast food for an entire month.

Running - going fairly well. I've maintained at @ 30 mpw for several months now. I need to work on my long runs. The hotter it gets, the shorter they've become. I'm adjusting to the heat/humidity better, but have accepted the fact I'm going to be slower over the summer. I begin a marathon training program with USA Fit next week, and am very excited for that.
Lifting - sporadic. I'll use my summer vacation to live at the gym so lifting will improve then. I'll also be adding aerobics, and be able to return to kickboxing over the summer.
Eating - not bad, not bad. Need to eat healthier, but I'm not having weight issues, so I'll take it!

Running is going real well. I really am not training for anything right now which is weird. I need to find an event to look forward to race. I am feeling strong and really feel like I am getting faster and faster.
Eating-still working hard on trying to eat correctly. It is hard with constant trips to the hospital and shift work.

Not too well..
Running: I just started to run regularly again having just recovered from a stress fracture I sustained in March. Did a couple of 10 min test runs to check out the injury and now having done 2 15 min runs this week w/o any soreness or reinjury, I'm now confident to begin my comeback into running once more . No races for some time though
Swimming: I swim to X-train while recovering from the injury and I do anywhere between 400-700m swims per session 2-3X a week.
Lifting: Haven't done that for a long time since last year.
Eating: I still eat the same amount of food I eat everyday since my teens which is alot. I'm one of those guys who have a high metabolism and eat lots but hardly gain any weight. I'm actually quite skinny for 19-20 year old male (5 ft 9', 138-140 lbs, at times can get as low as 135lbs) BF % last time I checked was 8.8%

Running: my stretching, massage program has helped work out kinks and misalignments in my posture which have really screwed up my running over the last few months. i feel like i am on a real road to recovery now and ran a 5K yesterday that helped me believe. I am running every other day for the time being; very paranoid of that knee thing happening again.
lifting: use the bowflex machine every other day for upper body strength only. i'm very happy with this machine altho it doesn't have the strongest reputation, both my husband and i have used it consistently and are happy with our own results....
eating: i have added protein to my diet over the last few months and have come off a vegetarian diet which had all of us kinda depleted. protein in the form of chicken, turkey and fish - still can't do the red meat thing.
there's about 5 races this summer; i'd love to do another half in the fall.

Running: Was progressing well towards my goal of sub 19 5k with races of 19:29 and 19:22. This past weekend probably set me back as I went 4 days with no running and a lot of gorging on good food and drinking beer... I still think sub 19 is very possible but I need to get focused again on it.
Lifting: Has been consistent. I think I've peaked as far as how much weight I'll ever bench press. I just can't add any more bulk to my upper body with my running program and I'm not going to cut back on the running. At 162 lbs I'm going to have to be happy with a bench of 235 lbs. and not the 250 I had hoped to reach this year. Much as I don't want to admit it, I think age is becoming a factor in weightlifting also. Overall, I'm happy with my upper body strength.
Eating: I see food, I eat it. I have a better diet than the average American, not as good a diet as a lot of the folks here who pay attention to their eating habits. I was around 167 lbs all winter, have been as low as 160 lbs this spring and really would like to stay around 165.
