Ok, so the past 24 hours I had to stand around a funeral home looking at relatives that I don't know, rarely see, and I'm talking I haven't seen some in 30 years.....

I am amazed at the number of people willing to walk right up to me, upon discovering my identity, and make a comment about my lack of hair. Even more baffling is the fact that the majority of men in this extended family have male pattern baldness. I have simply decided to remove the pattern and go slick.

if this were one or two people, I'd laugh it off as just a couple of hicks who don't know their manners. I'm going to go with a conservative guess and say I had at least 10 people mention it.

I didn't see any need to talk about their lack of appropriate clothing, or the fact that some needed to see a dentist, or that a few might benefit from a shower and shampoo. I didn't mention that there are several chapters of weight watchers and at least one gym that they might want to take advantage of. what gives with them needing to point out that I have no hair?

Unless it's to say something like "Bald looks hot on you" I'd probably keep my mouth shut.

It's amazing how my in-laws tease me about my height. Dude, that joke is OLD. Here I try to teach my son to never tease people about things they can't change (height, weight, beliefs, etc) and here they come braying about how short I am. (I'm 2 inches shorter than her) WTH?

i think it's a family thing. i doubt you would hear those comments at a college reunion. families, even the ever-extended version, seem to just take liberties that know no boundaries, even though it really is offensive.

i can remember alot of "you're so fat" stuff being thrown around at reunions....and i remember my brother telling me "damnit, you have really changed" the first time he saw me in 15 years. i wanted to slap him! for some reason, physical comments seem like an acceptable thing to say...who knows maybe the baldness thing is especially targeted; i think they think they're being amusing or comedic. and you should have countered with the "and just what decade did you visit the dentist, just wonderin..." all's fair! Wink

sounds like a real day.

I've always wondered why physical appearance comments are ok in my husband's family. It's bizarre.

Remember the five year rule:

What will this mean in five years ?

My suggestion: let it go.

I only say stuff like that to people who know I'm kidding and like them a lot.

That leaves family out.

It's hard to let go when these peeps do it every time you see them.

It amazes me sometimes how being someone's uncle, aunt, cousin, whatever makes someone feel they have the right to say what they want because you're "one of theirs".

Mama once gave me some of the best advice I ever ever gotten. "You don't have to put up with an a$$hole just because she/he is blood."

Sheesh. My mom gave me the same advice, almost to the letter. Very Happy

And I've put it to good use with family, as needed.

thanks! I can't help but think that I was one of the few there that actually participated in some kind of exercise program. And yes, I am comfortable with it, not to mention that I've been told that I have a confidence that is sometimes intimidating. maybe I should start using that to my advantage.

Considering everything you have overcome in the last year or two, my friend.....I'd be laughing all the way to the gym too. Think back to about 2 years ago, comments like that would have hit you a lot differently.

As the infamous "they" say....you've come a LONG way, baby! Wink
