lots of rain here today in RT. A doe wanders into a creek to get a drink of water. Said doe gets stuck in the mud has sunk 6 inches into the mud. A upset and concerned resident calls about it.
We go, yeah it is stuck, way back into the woods. Since we are not issued deer extracting equipment we have to call the PA Game Commission. They say "Oh well, nothing we can do either, see if it frees itself otherwise let nature take its course"

BTW State law prohibits us from doing anything else with deer unless they are injured we are authorized to shoot to kill.

so wait until it injures itself trying to escape, then go shoot it.

otherwise, refer said caller to the PA Game Commission.

I'd have to free it somehow. could probably harness it easy enough with rope and get it loose. it's letting it loose from the rope that could get ugly - strong legs and very sharp hooves. If can't do while on duty, wait till shift change and do it off the clock. It's probably not going anywhere... you and Greg could do as a team and report back here.

really our hands are tied (excuse pun) with this one... PA Game commission said hands off...they stay off. Sucks for the deer.

This reminds me that a couple of weeks ago, as I was about to drive out of the parking lot at work a car passes in front of me and hits a deer about 10 yards away. I could see it struggling and finally ended up just sitting with legs tucked under but obviously unable to move any more.

The road was pitch black (no street lights, wooded). I was concerned that someone would get hurt by hitting it. Drove to the police building, no one there. I hesitated to call 911 because no imminent concern for anyone (unless a car came up the dark, dark road). I eventually called my boss who was staying late and told him to find a non-emergency number for the po po to see what they could do. Felt a little silly but I was concerned about others running into it and getting hurt.

My question... don't call 911 in this case, right??

do not ever question. It is an accident and 911 should be called. We need to handle dead and or injured deer because the state tracks them and we need to euthanize a deer if it is injured anyway.

If you have any doubts call 911.

Sounds good to me, You go off get your hunting license (if you don't have one) Track him down and shoot him with an automatic weapon from your squad's armory! Then you can take the meat and have a butcher prep it and donate it to a homeless shelter.
