Run of the Mill 5 & 10 K, Lena IL
Another inaugural race, and JACKED UP's debut as a race director. There must be something in the water in the Riff Raff Lounge, because everyone who takes their hand at RD-ing does a terrific job. See her report there.
Being a small race, and a lot of volunteers, I did not decide until about a half-hour before the start whether I'd run at all, and then literally a minute before the races began which one I'd do. I opted for the 5, as: 1) I hadn't run yesterday due to 2) the surgery and its after-effects and 3) I still had questions on the achilles - notably whether it could take 10K.
The course is interesting in that it starts in the rural area, and winds its way into Lena (and back for both races). The hills roll, and I was doing finr the first mile. The heel started to bother me at about the half-way point, but I was in a good spot - fifth overall, second in my AG. I had a small lead over the next guy in my group, which I was able to hold onto for about another 3/4 mile. At that point (about 2 1/4 miles), he passed me for good - he really took off. He built a lead of, I'm guessing, 2, 21/2 minutes, which I was able to cut into but not enough for the end.
I finished in a slow (for me) 27:45.40, which given the leg, was still OK as it was under a nine-minute pace (my tooth issue never bothered me). It was a 3rd place medal for the AG ( ), 6th overall, and I believe 6th of 8 males. I know - not many runners. But any award you go out and earn - it makes no difference how few or how many. I'm very happy with that, and to have had Deb there to get it.
And one nice thing with small races - there's a lot more support, interaction and camaraderie among the runners and the runners with the volunteers. It's a nice feeling.

Great job you! You prolly made the right choice to run and not ride the course with me. Even though your achilles is sore, me and my bike falling on you would have had far worse consequences.
HARDWARE!!!! KEWL!
Those were nice medals too. And did you see those trophies??

Way to go, Gee-Dawg. That's a fine effort for a guy who just had himself rendered unconscious recently!
Nicely done!
