What's harder: giving up stuff by choice or having to give it up?

Jesus fasted and many Christians believe in fasting--I believe that that is similar in intent to Lent.

Biblical fasting is always accompanied by intense times of prayer and devotion. I wonder if that's the case with modern Lent or is it more about going 'through the motions'?

That's what we were just going over in my confirmation class this week, Aire. It's part supposed to give us some sense of solidarity with those less fortunate who don't get to eat double quarter pounders EVER, during Lent or otherwise--since the early Christians fasted and gave to the poor the food they abstained from eating. What I've learned recently is that the practice was adapted from Jesus' journey into the desert, where he fasted for 40 days (hence the 40 days of Lent) and was then tempted by Satan and refused to concede to him. (Mt 4: 1-11). That's as close to a reference as I can dig up for you, JJ. It's not directly commanded that we do so, but Catholic teaching references that passage when explaining the tradition of fasting and penance. I'm not exactly sure where the tradition of "giving up" a specific something for Lent came from, other than that Lent itself is a season of prayer, penance and charity. I'm thinking the US Catholic Bishops made that change, just a guess.
The Operation Rice Bowl project is what our church participates in, I don't know if other churches have something similar, since this is part of Catholic Relief Services. http://orb.crs.org/
I'm dying but I'm doing OK with no candy of any sort.....I almost caved the other day and attacked a bag of M&Ms but I passed unscathed
