Well, the largest companies in the states are BP, Texaco-Chevron, and Exxon-Mobil.
What specific sort of stuff you looking for?

NDOl (nord oil) is an excellent 2 year investment. Though most are saying its a good 1 year investment. Don't let it being a pennny stock scare you away. All the more for it to go up.

That ship has sailed.
With retail booming the next month, I'd go for Mattel and Hasbro.
Then bigger ticket, Polaris and Bombardier.
Maybe Target and JCPenney.
Apple is on a run now with ipod sales.
Restaurants?.. Wendys, Outback.
and just one more hunch, how about the Neptune Society..cremation, there's always a surge after the holidays.

Thanks for the tips guys. It's a fun project for one of his classes. He's really into it to cuz he's over my shoulder every 3 minutes saying "hey Mom get off there so I can check my stocks." The boy is cuttin' into my riff raffin time!

For software/telecom stocks:
Cisco -- the ever-present bell-weather. Tends slowly up.
Alcatel -- similar trend.
Research In Motion (aka RIM) -- They're the Blackberry guys. They're in a legal battle right now, which has pulled their stock down. If they win, it'll rocket.
Cognos -- they do business software to compete with SAP. They're pretty steady.

One sector that I always like to have in my portfolio is a utility company, not so much for the stock growth potential but as an income stock. Most utilities that are publicly trader pay a nice dividend, and have a good yield. People will always be using heat, light, and power.

I'm not sure on the specifics of insider trading, but as long as it's not information you're giving or receiving about your employer's company, spouses employer or dependent's company or you own a substantial (5% maybe) share of the company, there's nothing to worry about.
Am I right Prohemp?

Unless you're actually trading based on material non-public information, it isn't insider trading.
