- New HVAC system (gotta have a license to do that (side note: I've often pondered getting one))
- asbestos abatement when a pipe burst in the kitchen (again, regular Joes can do that because asbestos handling is regulated by the gov't)
- install new carpet (wife wouldn't let me try)
- Fix a broken lift spring on the garage door (a dang dangerous job. I knew a guy that knew a guy that got his faced messed up trying to do it himself)
Other than those things, I've done everything else myself. Same goes for cars too. It's got to be a pretty major job before I'll take it to someone else. I fix all the appliances unless they are still under warranty. Computers? I'd sooner eat my shoe than pay someone to fix mine.
At one point I was just too dang poor to pay to have people do the work for me so I had to learn to do it myself. It's just carried over since then. It's a very helpful skill to have too, that way you'll know if a mechanic/computer repair guy/contractor is giving you the shaft or not. |
Did I mention the house next door is for sale?

* That's 3,000 sq.ft. of roofing for you layfolk.

It's a big ranch, that's why so much roof area. And that's not a job I'd like to tackle again. The compressor is a 5hp Cambell Hausfield with a 60 gallon tank. Pnuematic tools are great and the air nailer I borrowed from a friend for installing shingles was a life saver.
Also do 95% of vehicle maintenance and repair. We regularly buy used vehicles with about 40k miles on them and drive 'em to 140-150k and it helps to be able to fix the occasional burp. I love tinkering with older cars and trucks. Rebuilt a 71 Duster w/340 engine in mid 80's that was one of fastest small block cars in our area at the time. Kid no.1 forced sale of that vehicle for "a more family oriented" vehicle.... which is when I brought home my first 4x4 .... that little 1/2 ton shortbed Dodge with a 6 cyl and 3 on the tree ended up breathing fire thru a built 400 big block, close ratio truck 4 speed (rare tranny), rebuilt 3/4 ton running gear, 35 inch tires and a fine paint job installed by yours truly. I was proud of the paint more than anything. I shocked a few Mustangs and Camaros in the stoplight to stoplight competitions with that beast....

In the middle of a project right now at home (pics to follow) I am redoing my den ie. paint, crown and chair rail mouldings. I can do most things around the house myself. Since we've moved into our new house I have done a few things, landscaping, painted most of the house, stained all of the wood work(base, casing, mantel etc..) Now my old house was a different story completely remodeled the kitchen and 2 bathrooms and numerous other projects. I am hoping this next fall/winter to start finishing my basement we'll see how the budget is.
