Posted: 06/01/06 - 16:50 Post subject: Holy Crap! College Women Athletes!
Working at this BB camp, I have the opportunity to work with several of SDSU's current players. (Including the two previous Miss Basketball of South Dakota winners)
Wow! These girls are so freaking muscular and athletic, I can't believe it.
I understand that these are Div I college athletes.
But just the build, and confidence in which these young ladies carry themselves...it's just amazing.
One of the other male HS coaches and I were talking today, and he was wearing "Megan's" name tag. I say, "you're Megan, huh?"
He says, "Well, she said we should switch, and wasn't gonna argue. She could kick my butt without breaking a sweat."
I did not finish college all that long ago. I remember the girls basketball players...sure, they were in shape, and good athletes...but these girls are like a new breed of athlete. Even the little guards...the have rippling muscles....chiseled legs...thick shoulders....
Color me impressed with today's training standards. Coach told me that the whole team is staying in Brookings to work out together all summer. And that by the end of June, they will have all the girls that will be freshmen there too.
Amazing dedication by these young ladies.

Thirty plus years ago my wife was on the first ever Lady Pirates Basketball Team at Seton Hall University. Tryouts were held at the gym for anyone that wanted to play.
Practice was after ALL of the other athletic stuff was done (Including intramurals).
Today the Lady Pirates are a Division I school, have some pretty good players, scholarships and all the usual recruiting activities. At this year's Alumni Game my wife played in the scrimmage. When she commented she was the oldest one there, I added she could be the team mother.

Semi off topic, but this drives me nuts. Unless the men are going to be called the Gentlemen Pirates (which would be an oxymoron, but even so), there is no reason to call the women's team the "Lady" Pirates. It just tells me that the women aren't good enough to be real Pirates.

Think what you want, but the women's team was originally called the "Bucettes" (as in Bucaneers). Still think "Lady Pirates" is a bad choice ?

/Where's Pirate Coach when you need him???
/Off topic: I was watching the highlights of the wimmins softball last night: Some of those girls are downright beautiful!!! Wow!

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. I think the idea of the "Lady __________s" is a great solution. Its a great compromise over naming the women's team some "disparaging" "girly girly" name. Think Title IX and other laws.
I note the USAF calls all their people "Airmen" reguardless of sex. Maybe they should call their women "flight babes".

That said, there is one school (at least that I know of) that would actually cause a problem here. What about...

Right. I wouldn't go with something different. Both have to have the same team name.
So what does Oregon State call their female teams? The Lady Beavers? Oh, that's much better.

Having visited the Oregon State Athletic Department's Site it would appear the women's teams are simply called "The Beavers", or Oregon State.
Edited to add: Why do you want to differentiate the women's teams from the men's teams ? Aren't they both doing their best to represent the school ? Why would you want to relegate them to a "second class" citizenship ? You're not "good enough", or women's sports isn't "real" enough to have (Insert school name here) in your team name.

I agree. Our school's mascot is the Cubs. Both boys and girls. But since so many schools use "Lady" in front of their mascot (like 95%) we are listed as "Lady Cubs" in the programs at most games.
I guess it's not bigee. But...especially if it's an animal...animals have two sexes? right? I mean do there have to be "lady tigers"? Lady Wildcats? can't they just be the animal?
(Sidenote....a school in here in SD has Bucks as their male mascot, and gazelles as their female. another has Mustangs and Phillies)
