Continuing an idea that there are a lot of poor people all around us in this country, here is an activity you can do with kids this holiday season. Go to a dollar store with a kid. Give them 5 or 10 $1 bills. Tell them to walk around and choose things people need. As much as you can, let it be the kid's choice unless it's totally inappropriate. Then with your kids, take the items to a shelter, soup kitchen or wherever you know they'll get to people who need them. See what kind of discussion ensues. Ask why they picked what they did--it gives great insight into what a terrific kid you have. A great good deed that's easy.

Unfortunatly I don't have any kids and I don't know where a Dunkin' Doughnuts is so I can't get any kids.
My class did donate money to get toys for kids at a local shelter.

It is a good idea. We do something similar with food boxes from the local food bank. My 6-yr old spent 1-1/2 hours last weekend stuffing a can of cranberries in to each box that rolled by every 2-3 seconds. And we've in the past been on the donating end too, delivering them. He was so proud to be the youngest, volunteering with grownups. With the questions he asked, he did learn a lot too.
There is definitely much for kiddos to learn over the holidays that don't involve any fake beards and red suits

This is a great thing to do.
And it is a great thing to do in March when there is no special holiday and the food banks/shelters are running low.
