Posted: 12/13/04 - 12:16 Post subject: Holiday Tipping
I was just thinking of asking you guys about this last week and now I came across this article on MSN, though I didn't find it terribly helpful.
http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/SavingandDebt/P58017.asp
Do you tip? Who? How much? How? I add the last part 'cause I rarely see my trashmen and I think they end up getting stiffed more often than the others. Should I tape an envelope to the can? Who knows?!! The paper guy has taken to inserting a holiday card in a mid-December Sunday delivery, which conveniently lists his home address. Crass? maybe. Convenient? you know it!!

The lawn-care crew... n/a
Pool cleaner... NIW
Pet groomer... I'll tip myself
day care center... n/a
Your employees:
Nannies... NIW
Full-time housekeepers... NIW
Home-care attendants... NIW
Caretakers... NIW
If you're not planning to tip your full-time employees..

The paper carrier thing is crass.
We don't get home delivery of our newspapers. But if we did, we would not tip the carrier. Same goes for the mail carrier. For a very simple reason - they are not the ones who deliver every day. If they're gone a month or two, what are you supposed to do - keep track of who delivers how many times? No way of knowing that. And with both mail and newspapers, we aren't home (or awake) when delivery is made, so there's no way of knowing.
I was always taught (?) that "tip" meant "to insure promptness." Mail and paper delivery is not reliable. You could maybe set your sundial to it but that's about all.
For the others as a holiday gift, no. That's what bonuses are for. I don't get a holiday bonus - in fact, I found out about fifteen minutes ago that a position I applied for went to someone else. And I don't get tips from the people we serve. I am just treating them as I get dealt with.

I tip the trashmen/recycle dudes, mail guy, and paper guy. If the paper guy doesn't deliver all the time, it is up to him/her to pay out his/her replacement. But I know how little they make so I help them out at the holidays. Everyone else gets a tip after services rendered.
TIP = "a gift or a sum of money tendered for a service performed or anticipated". It thanks someone for a job well done and ensures it will continue to be done well.

I will refrain from a second edition of the "Red Foreman - Kicking... " thread. Maybe.
But I'm especially nasty today as I'm working on three hours' sleep - woke up before 1 a.m. this morning, and couldn't fall off again. For the sake of the wimmen here (and the one at home ), I will strive to be good.

I tip the two women who dote on me at the salon (one for hair-fro-frou and one who rips it out by the roots)... and I tip generously even in cash-strapped times.
used to tip the paper boy $10-20 when I had it delivered
Kids' teachers always get something. I cringe at the organized monetary collection by some PTA mom but sometimes convenience prevails.

I think I want to tip the Dunkin Donuts lady who gets my coffee every morning.
Partly because she never gets it wrong.
Partly because I've seen that she deals with a bunch of crap from a lot of customers.
And partly because she's cute as all get out.
KIDDING!
I don't get the argument about not tipping people who deliver papers though, I mean, it's not like a mail carrier. They don't get a wage or salary above what they earn in tips...

Except for the garbagemen, I don't have people that provide those listed services, so I'm off the hook.
As for the garbagemen, HA! When they put my cans where I left them instead of the middle of the street, then I'll consider it.

I usually tip the paper carrier. We have auto pay so there is no tips during the year. We get an envelope with the Thanksgiving paper.
The rest get nothing. Some a illegal to tip anyway. not that that stops it

I will have to respectfully disagree. My son delivered papers for many years through sun, snow, rain and blizzards. He placed the papers where the customers wanted it. Some were ok on the driveway, some wanted it by the front door. They received exceptional service. Most people gave him a tip for Christmas. One notable exception never, ever gave him a tip through all the years.
One note our local papers demand the carriers deliver the papers before 0700 on weekdays and before 0800 on Sundays. You can set your watch by our paper carrier.
Remember, this person provides you a service, just like a cab driver, hairdresser or server in a restaurant. Not tipping them is just plain crass.
BTW what do you mean your USPS delivery is not "reliable" ?

Daphne: cuts my hair every month. Cost: $11.00; tip - $4.00. December's haircut - $11.00. Gave her a twenty and said, "Keep the change."
Trash collector: a case of his favorite beer, delivered the Wednesday before Christmas.
Letter carrier: no regular, but if there was, a tenner would be given, along with a card.
It's only money.

I am a great tipper for my hair and nails all year long. Read: Over-tip... my nails and hair are very important to me. So no, I wouldn't tip these gals again just for the holidays.
When we lived in Indy, I had the BEST mail carrier, Becky. When I had both my surgeries, she brought the mail to the apt instead of using our mailbox. I thought that was cool, so she got something at Christmas. I tipped the UPS guy that year too as I was always getting something delivered by Brown, and well, he was really cute. My tips involved gift certs and cards though, not cash.
