Posted: 12/30/04 - 12:10 Post subject: Holiday Medical Saga (Ongoing) Update 2
So....
Sunday PM I go take a tinkle and I see blood in the urine. No temps, I feel good otherwise.
Monday I go to MD. Get put on Cipro (As a postal worker this is good news in case of Anthrax attack) Go to work. NO problems at work at all - drinking lots and lots of liquids.
Tuesday AM I awakened by pain in abdomen. (To shorten the tale it was a gas bubble) Pain subsides but MD office sends me to ER. Spend 4 hours in ER waiting to be seen. Fortunately, we had the luck to be part of a four hour dialogue by two rather unique characters...
After being seen by MD in ER sent for CAT Scan - Tests on urine sample show lots of blood (no kidding). CAT Scan and Bloot tests come back negative - i.e. everything is working fine. Follow up visit with urology people on Jan 7.
Now I'm going through the rounds with the MD Office about a return to work certificate - in 20+ years of operation they are acting like they have "never" come across one of these... I'll keep you posted.
Update 1: All tests came back negative i.e. No "Big C" cells. Next MD visit on Friday Jan 7.
Update 2: Last couple of tinkles looked clear. Feeling better as we go along

Have you been running alot lately? Long distances?
Even so, blood in the urine is nothing to play around with.

Best of luck to you for a quick diagnosis and recovery.

I hope it's nothing serious.
I had the same thing summer of 03, turned out to be a UTI. Seems like with your testing though, they'd have caught this were it the case with you.
Cipro, that's a serious antibiotic! I just did some reading on webmd, you probably know these things but just in case:
Do not take antacids that contain calcium, magnesium, or aluminum (e.g., Tums or Rolaids); the ulcer medicine sucralfate (Carafate); or vitamin or mineral supplements that contain calcium, iron or zinc for a minimum of 6 hours before or 2 hours after a dose of ciprofloxacin. Taking antacids, sucralfate, or vitamin or mineral supplements too close to a dose of ciprofloxacin can greatly decrease the effects of the antibiotic. Avoid excessive consumption of products that contain caffeine. Ciprofloxacin may increase the effects of caffeine.
Also: Before taking ciprofloxacin, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:
* didanosine (Videx, ddI);
* theophylline (Theo-Dur, Theolair, Slo-Phyllin, Slo-Bid, Elixophyllin);
* warfarin (Coumadin);
* probenecid (Benemid);
* insulin or an oral diabetes medication such as glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (Micronase, Diabeta, Glynase), and others;
* a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Nuprin, others), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, Anaprox), ketoprofen (Orudis KT, Orudis, Oruvail), and others;
* phenytoin (Dilantin); or
* cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune).
You may not be able to take ciprofloxacin, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above.
And yeah, definitely keep up on the drinking extra water.
Keep us posted.

Brie:
Thanks for the advice. I haven't had an antacid since Xmas Day. Unlike many people in their 50's I don't take any of those other meds either.
BTW when I was being interviewed at the ER about general health questions like: breathing difficulties, heart problems etc etc. After about the 4th or 5th time, I would add that in August I ran a half marathon. This seemed to answer many of the questions.

Been checked for a kidney stone? or possibly prostate issues.
As a guy and an athlete i'd hazzard a guess at the kidney stone. If it's in the kidney still it really does not hurt but it can cause blood in the urine.

Good luck and stick to your guns. If you feel something is wrong and needs attention--keep being the squeaky wheel.

It kind of sounds like a UTI, but kidney stones could be a possibility. I would think they would also be checking any possible prostate problems too?
Good luck, hopefully it is just an UTI, and the Cipro should take care of that.

I just want to make sure people understand:
I had a CAT scan yesterday and several other blood/uriune analyses. The CAT scan was negative for kidney stones, the blood/urine tests were negative for infections and, like I mentioned in the update, the "Big C".
Right now all the MDs know is I have blood in my urine. I can say it seems to have gotten slightly better.
PS: Thanks for the good wishes
