Posted: 01/08/03 - 00:11 Post subject: Holiday Dinner
My wife (Omega) and I have been discussing what is included in a traditional holiday (thanksgiving or Christmas) dinner. I came from a simple family that would have a "traditional" meal.
Turkey
Stuffing (cooked in the bird)
Mashed potatoes
Gravy
A vegetable: broccoli, peas, corn
Cranberry sauce and rolls
And for desert, pie, apple or pumpkin.
Omega thinks that is far too few choices so she adds many extras. I say she is wasting her time; there is already way too much food.
What do you think is included in a traditional holiday dinner? :

Hi, and welcome, Delta Lambda!
Your idea of a traditional meal is included in what we have with my husband's family a couple of times every year. But I couldn't live without Aunt Inez's TURNIP GREENS. Mmmm...
A few more staples at the table: mashed turnips, ham, raw veggies, spinach dip, and green bean casserole. I'm glad it's too much food, in a way -- more leftovers!
Over and out,

You forgot to mention that my family has a different tradition than yours...you know, the Italian tradition. My family has two dinners for everything; first the Italian course, then the American course. It's not that I think there a too few choices in the traditional dinner, it's just that I never had a traditional dinner!
And yes, bonobo! I like the leftovers when there's lots of food!

I think anytime families are together at a time when they are normally not, is special. You could have hot dogs and beans. Its the company not the meal that makes it special.

i like this. it's a nice thought Cappy. howEVER, i would love to see the look on my MIL's face at my next "reunion" when i roll out the weiners and beans. can i borrow the Gregcam for that???? i'd be all for it--less hassle, less clean up, less is more. it would be a candid camera moment though - not to be missed on film.
welcome to Delta Lambda.
i'm more traditional myself, in spite of my semi-Italian background, i've always done your menu exactly.

Green bean casserole is a must-have item on any holiday menu and it's got to have those crunchy french fried onions on top too.

But PH, what about the bread?! Add some nice hard rolls or a fresh loaf of rye still warm from the oven to Delta's menu...then it'd be complete.

As getting the family together has become more complicated over the years with sick and elderly members as well as lots of new youn'uns, our family has decided this is the case. Unless one of us mid-generationers decides to cook (as I did for Christmas and my cousin did for Thanksgiving). Of course we still love the whole spread and do it when we can but we all would much rather spend the time together than have one or 2 slaving in the kitchen.

But we'd rather hang out with you!
although I like slaving in the kitchen when my family starts to have its "home for the holidays" ala Robert Downey Jr. moments....

Welcome Delta Lambda!
Your traditional holiday menu sounds exactly like what I had
when I was growing up.
Nowadays, however, I eat whatever somebody else is cooking.
