Posted: 01/08/03 - 13:05 Post subject: Italian Holiday Dinner or My Big Fat Italian Dinner
The holiday meal discussion was started because we had dinner at Omega’ mother’s house (Gamma Beta). There we have the traditional Italian holiday dinner consisting of a very ample portion of Lasagna, Italian sausage, olives, salad (Italian dressing), and Italian bread (dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar). This is because her father (Alpha Beta) insists that a meal is not a meal without pasta.
Then when we have finished that meal and are all ready to explode, she brings out the American traditional meal with turkey (the biggest one she could find), gravy, potatoes, candied yams, baked pears, bread, green bean casserole, and a baked ham. Then Gamma Beta is upset that nobody seems hungry.
But now we are ready for the 6 varieties of pie with whipped cream, cheesecake, and ice cream. Luckily there is a bowl of fruit for those of us who are still hungry after dinner.

for someone like me, who hates cooking for a crowd, i would like to salute Gamma Beta. This woman is an artiste in the kitchen.
putting that meal together for a bunch of people is the equivalent of running a marathon.
does she allow take-home containers?

Ha! She insists on take-home containers. Sometimes you get a whole pie and enough lasagna to last for a week!

Welcome Delta Lambda! Although I'm a little surprised you aren't Alpha...
Anyway, your meal description is perfect. Pretty much MY favorite food. Well, food is my favorite food, but that's another story. And that Italian stuff that OL's family has sounds pretty good too. So, if you guys have any leftovers that you just can't possibly eat, send 'em to me!

I gotta go with omega on this one, dude....coming from the same Sicilian/Italian background I am all too familiar with the necessity to fast for three days before heading to Grandma's for a 75 course dinner!!!! She's almost 90 now so one of the grandkids usually does the holiday dinner when we all get together, but even when it's just our small part of the family we still do a lot of the double feast things. More so at Christmas than Thanksgiving. We're more like your menu then, with a few extras. The GB casserole is a must, as are my new favorite streuseled sweet potato casserole, courtesy of Cooking Light, and roasted cauliflower.
IMHO, the more leftovers the better! That's what the freezer's for! Bring it on!
