Posted: 09/06/03 - 08:07 Post subject: Hmmm...gym membership @ $8 / mo.
We decided to change our family membership @ the Y to a single membership since I'm the only one that still goes. I think it's around $45 / mo. and I go about 3x a week. Mostly just to swim, but sometimes I'll hit the treadmill. There are 2 bad things about the Y. It's 7 mi. from home (which isn't bad really) but it's not really between work and home which makes it a little inconvenient to go to sometimes. The worst part is that they close the pool at the littlest rumble of thunder. That part cancels a lot of my swims or cuts them short.
Anyway, I got a wild hair yesterday and checked out a couple of local other gyms.
One's got an unheated outdoor pool that's open year-round that's really close to work, so I could swim or run (when it's really hot/cold) at lunch and it's about the same price as the Y.
The other is also really close to work, but it's got no pool. It's just free weights / machines and cardio equipment. BUT, it's only $8 / mo if you pay up front for 24 mos.
I'm considering joining it in addition to the Y because it's open early, 5AM, and stays open really late, 11PM.
Anybody else have 2 gym memberships or see a problem with having 2? It would be so good to be able to run inside in the A/C and then hit the showers at lunch.

That's not a bad deal, and it seems more convienent. Are you committed after the 24 months?

I'm gonna have to ask what happens at the end of the 2 years. There's no sign-up fee and no contract, just $199 for 2 years.
I think I'm going to go one day during the week next week and run to see how it fits into my schedule.

That deal sounds like the one I signed at my gym $499 for 36 month (but yours is so much better!) At mine I'm not committed any longer than I am paying, I would think thats how yours would be too.
I've considered getting a second membership at a gym downtown adjacent to where I work, in addition to my 3 years paid gym, so I can get some workouts in (and more importantly the post workout shower) during lunch. Its going to be ~$30/month, no pool but nice facility and it would be easy to slip in early or after work in addition to lunch. I think I could get a lot more done, ie, weights/additional mileage if I did this...still thinking on it....
You let me know how you feel about 2 gym memberships first. I was starting to feel like a muscle-head (minus the body) for thinking this way....

I was just going through the gym/Y/pool thing myself. I had a swimming problem and where to go.
We've got a great gym membership with a wonderful childcare. It's $89/month for hubby and I. Free childcare. Clean. Rows of treadmills, ellipticals, stepmills. TV's between every other cardio equipment. No time limit on the cardio stuff and they are always open. Free weight area. Cybex machines (I use). Spinning class room. Aerobics. NO POOL! OH...once a month they have a night called Parent's Night Out and have babysitting for the kids while parents get an five hour evening out. I go because my kids love it and they actually do activities with the them. I don't want to lose that. It took me six years to find a gym where the kids would like it and not cry. Now I have to pry them away. Hours 4am-11pm. I go two hours a day most days. It's pricey...but worth it. My husband has lost 50 pounds in the past few months doing the elliptical machines. Not bad. Oh...not a foo foo/rah rah place. People actually are there to workout and not put on a show. 1 mile from home.
Y has a so/so gym. Fewer treadmills. Great pool. Opens at 5am. We have the kids signed up for the activities. Caitlin is on the swim team. I just used a few free passes to go to the pool and they ran out. We couldn't afford a second membership to the Y. I was told it would be $8/swim? So, I was bummed.
Good news! Our local pools offer lap swims at different hours/different days depending on the pool. Only $1.50 a swim or get a pass $32/30 swims. I just started this week doing the 5am swims. Not too far from the house. So, now I am back into the Tri training.
That $8 a month doesn't sound like a bad deal. It's a pain when you cannot find just one place with all the things you need/want.
Let us know what you decide.
PS Whenever we move (we've been on the moving track here for a few years), I always check out the gyms that will be there first. Schools and gyms.

I went ahead and laid out $200 for 24 mos. So that's $8.33 / week and I'm not obligated to continue once the contract expires.
Here's to running in the A/C when it's too hot to run outside.

I joined a relatively inexpensive gym 5 minutes from where I work and
even on the hottest days I couldn't bring myself to use the treadmill.
I still went outside and slogged it out. The showers and A/C locker
room are nice though.

I see no prob with having 2 memberships.
Gotta admit, it sounds funny to read about thunder closing the pool. Aside from kiddie pools or a homeowner with way too much money, everything is indoors here. I know, I know.. one less excuse for me to tri train.

about a month ago. It was $34.95 a month, no contract and no commitment. I can leave whenever I want and that's the way it should be. The health clubs should try to earn your business, day in and day out. I also think you should play hard ball with the clubs and not just accept the first offer they make. Everything is negotiable and the initiation fees are pure profit for them.
With the long summer nights all gone now and winter fast approaching, I love the ability to be able to run on the treadmill late a night safely. In fact I just got back in from 7 miles on the good old treadmill.

The only thing to be careful of in Georgia concerning paying for gym membrships in advance is that you are on your own if the gym folds prior to your expiration period. The state will not help you if you end losing your money. As long as you are comfortable with the advance fees and willing to take the chance, it sounds like a good deal.

I read that on the contract after I signed it. They've been in the same location for 5 years so that's a plus.
