Posted: 03/10/04 - 09:12 Post subject: Hillary Clinton --> Democratic VP nominee?
Neil Boortz, a nationally syndicated radio host based here in Atlanta, is speculating about Hillary Clinton's potential nomation for the Democratic VP position on Kerry's ticket in his latest daily radio notes. Sounds very plausible to me.... Your thoughts?
| Quote: | Dick Morris (who knows a thing or two about the Clintons, having worked for them) seems to think it's now or never for Hillary Clinton, and suggests that if she wants to become president, she will join the Kerry ticket as his vice presidential candidate. It's an interesting take and nobody is better at noodling out these things than Morris. The speculation is never going to go away until Kerry makes his choice.
Morris' reasoning goes like this: if Kerry gets elected (May God in heaven help us all) then he will run for re-election in 2008, which shuts Hillary out from making her run. Then, in 2012, Kerry's vice-presidential choice would follow tradition and run for president, shutting out Senator Clinton again. At that rate, her next opportunity would come in 2016, and if the aforementioned Democrat was re-elected, that puts Hillary's next shot at 2020, at which point she would be 73 years old. (Can you imagine? Let's not.)
Morris says if Kerry is anywhere close to Bush at convention time, Hillary will go for the VP slot, and because the Clintons control the Democratic party, Kerry will have to go along. Besides..who else is Kerry going to get...and does anyone really care? Another question...would Hillary be willing to sit on her hands for 8 years when she really wants the #1 job?
Now I know that this whole scenario sounds vaguely familiar to you. It should. I presented it to you about a week ago. Great minds think alike.

I'll start by saying that I HOPE NOT. This from a New Yorker and a registered Democrat.
Out of curiosity, who wrote this? The passage is obviously written from a republican point of view, and I think it may be based more upon wishful thinking than fact. Edit: Sorry - nevermind on the who. Wishful thinking still applies, though.
Anyway, I would doubt it. Senator Clinton doesn't even have a strong following in her own state of service, much less the rest of the nation. Kerry would be shooting himself in the foot, and he knows it. The last polls I saw projected a Kerry/Edwards ticket winning by 7 points over Bush/Cheney, so I'd think that combination a more likely possibility.

I was always called the sharpest butterknife in the drawer....
Actually I agree that Morris is a bombthrower.......People either love or hate Dame Hillary.....she could be quite the lighting rod
As for Edwards, while charasmatic, he probably wouldn't have even been reelected in his own state as a senator, so his appeal might not be that strong.......I would have to think that Kerry will pick someone like Gephardt to gain the Midwest vote (read Rustbelt and Cornbelt)
or Richardson to neutralize Bush's Hispanic vote......
will be an interesting year

She'd have no chance at becoming president. She'd be an interesting VP, though.

Neil Boortz has been on Atlanta radio for 30+ years now. His morning show on WSB-750 is the Number 1 show in Atlanta and is now nationally syndicated across the country. He is admitted libertarian, not a republican.
Putting aside Boortz's opinions on Morris' commentary... Which part of the thought process do you disagree with RLAG? Again, it all sounds perfectly plausible to me. If Hillary wants the job, you know there will be enormous pressure on Kerry to select her for the V-P nominee slot.

I think the whole thing makes way too many assumptions to be of much use. Is it plausible? Sure. Likely? I don't think so. There's too many things that have to fall in place for the argument to work.

I give America more credit than to give Bill Clinton any more opportunites to step foot in the White House. Hilary on any ticket will nix it.

I would have to think that nothing would mobilize Republican voters more than the thought of another Clinton in the White House. Even now, when I'm not sure who I'd vote for, I know that would swing my vote.

I think it's amusing that anyone thinks either Clinton has that much power. While I think HRC got a raw deal for being a strong woman while she was First Lady, I also think she's let the party down on numerous occasions as a senator. She unnerves me. Maybe not for the same reasons she unnerves you, but she unnerves me anyway.
Here's the thing: Dems feel they have no choice but to be as strategic as possible, to do whatever it takes to get into the White House. If HRC on a ticket has even a scant trace of not going well, it won't happen.
And I think it's WAY more than a scant trace.

I think if Kerry asked her, she'd tell him no.
I don't think he'll ask Edwards.
We'll find out soon enough.
