With the invention of DVD and high quality, home entertainment centers, why is it still worth it to see film in movie theaters?
Does "the big screen" and seeing movies 6 months (on average) early really make that much of a different (especially at $6 - 9 a person!)?
Why do you continue to see movies in theaters?
Benefits of at home
1) I can watch it when I want to (afetr its release on DVD)
2) I always have a good seat
3) Don't have to worry about annoying patrons
4) I can rewind if I miss something
5) I don't have to pay ridiculous vender prices
What's the consenus here and why?

Love the DVDs and could not live without my Netflix!!! BUT still enjoy going to the movies, love a matinee on a rainy day. I will not go to a movie when it first comes out, will wait over a month so the theater will be relatively empty, hate when people are sitting directly around me...............and yes I still do love a large popcorn (no butter please)

Not discussing my personal tv situation, but some people do not have
giant screen tvs. Certain movies are just so much cooler to see on the big
movie theatre screen i.e. LOTR......and there is something about movie
theatre popcorn yummmmm

Depends on the flick, but yes, it does matter. I am still bitter I never saw the rolling hills from Braveheart on the big screen. Many movies are much better and more powerful in the theatre; at home they pale in comparison. Examples include Gone with the Wind, Titanic, Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Silence of the Lambs, The Matrix, The Italian Job , LOTR 1 & 2... I could go on forever. Sweeping epics, digital masterpieces, and super action-packed movies just look, sound, and "feel" better on the big screen. But other movies I love like Dude, Where's My Car? and Office Space are fine on the small screen.
On a side note, people think the movies are expensive. But when you look at the price tag v. the actual cost of production, the American Cinema is one of the cheapest entertainment options around. Like Happy2tri I usually wait a few weeks, too - fewer people to ruin the experience.

We have a big screen (62") t.v., so we see a lot of the movies at home. We factored the $$ we'd save not taking 4 people to the movies as much as we used to into the ridiculous cost of the thing.
However, there is a feeling to going to see a movie and out to dinner that I always enjoyed, and still enjoy. It's exciting to get out once in a while, so for movie "events" (e.g. LOTR) we take in a movie and go out to eat.
Also, the kids love the "experience", too... so I'll take them to a matinee once in a while (saw Stuart Little 2 not too long ago). It gives them something to have a "childhood memory" of.

The movie theater is an experience, an event. DVD is sitting at home watching TV. Both can be good depending on the situation and the movie.
Having said that, I haven't been to the movie theater in more than a year, I'd guess. I can't even remember the last one I saw there.

All of the above, to one degree or another. We have that Netflix thingy going as well, so we're watching a lot of movies at home these days, on a regular ol' TV. No entertainment system, surround sound, etc.etc.
Some movies deserve a bigger screen and good sound. For that reason, and just because we like getting out of the house together, we still go to the theater. I would guess we go about 3 times a year. And big fat to the popcorn!

I prefer the movie theater experience. I like the big screen, dark theater, crappy seats that creak, and no distractions (presumably). At home (i love Netflix), i can sit and watch all the movies i missed in the theater or didn't want to pony up any money for (Final Destination 2). But, there are more distractions and i may do two things when watching a movie if i'm not completely in to it. Plus, i have a 19 inch tv with no sort of speaker system.

I would rather see the movie at home. My husband makes me go to the movies.

Its more of an 'experience' at the theater. Except I don't often have time for such experiences so I have netflix and catch them years later on my very small screen with factory speakers, rabbit ears, etc

an experience because you are all in anticipation or do you think a movie like American pie is funnier in the movies than at home??

As a SAHM I need to go out. I really like watching movies in the theaters. I did a lot of that while BC was deployed. (Too much crap going on at home to watch a movie all the way through)
Our entertainment center is really small. It's more of an entertainment stand, really. Not much there.
I loved LOTR at the theater. I will see some movies when they come out, but only at matinee time. I don't pay evening prices evah. (Too cheap, I guess)
We even have a theater that puts out a coupon once a month for a free LARGE tub of popcorn with any movie ticket purchased. Colin and BC love it!

In 4 years, I have been to one movie in the theater and that was 9 months ago.
I have no desire to mess with the crowd. Maybe if I had a date, but since I'm single, it just isn't worth it.
