Posted: 10/22/05 - 18:32 Post subject: Here's my resignation letter. What do you think, honestly?
October 22, 2005
KKT
To: Ms D. P.
cc: Mr H.B.
Dear D:
With respect for you and the Moorings of Islamorada, I feel that I can no longer continue in my current position as Controller for the Moorings. There are several reasons for this decision.
1) While I have contributed what I feel is more than an appropriate amount of time to accomplish my daily tasks and additional workload brought on by the exceptionally long absence of a co-worker, I do not feel like my additional efforts are appreciated or are nearly enough to finish the work in a timely fashion.
2) My health is a major concern at this point. Despite the facts that I have recently had emergency surgery on my foot due to a bone infection, and have documented evidence from the surgeon and hospital to attest to this fact, I was made aware that Mr. B thinks that my condition is “psychosomatic”. I was unaware that Mr. B was a trained health professional who could evaluate my condition from a remote location. Based on his callous, unprofessional, personal, and inappropriate remarks to my husband, Mr. L T, on Saturday, October 15, I can no longer work for this person in any capacity. He has, in effect, created a hostile work environment for me and I do not feel that I can be productive and perform my job duties effectively in this type of atmosphere.
3) I am willing to fulfill two weeks of work to allow you to hire another individual to take this position. I will need a work environment that is accommodating to my condition, which would include a desk where I can elevate my foot, per surgeon’s instructions.
4) I will need one month of severance pay, in compensation for my increased efforts in the last month and for the stressful work environment created by Mr. B.
It is unfortunate that I have to leave your employ; I feel that under different circumstances that we could have had a mutually beneficial relationship. Unfortunately, due to the conditions mentioned above, that is no longer possible.
Respectfully,
Kristin J. Kraft-Tuten

I think 3 and 4 are more related to how you want to arrange your remaining time there more than being reasons for leaving. I wouldn't list them as such.

I'm not current on your whole situation Kristen, but personally, I feel a resignation letter shouldn't be used to detail what you're unhappy with.
1. It's not likely to change anything.
2. You won't be able to rely on them for a recommendation later.
3. It's not likely to change anything.
Simple. Short. To the point. No apologies for leaving, because you aren't sorry.
| Quote: | Dear X,
This letter is to inform you that my final date of employment will be Nov X, 2005.
Sincerely,
Kristen Kraft-Tuten |
Just my 2 cents, but nothing good ever comes from firing back at an employer in a resignation letter, or exit interview.
Best of luck.

I agree with High Heat. The other parts of your letter can be discussed after the letter has been submitted

See, this is what I want; constructive criticism. Thank you very much. All I want from them in terms of a recommdation letter is what is required by law
1) start and end dates
2)beginning and ending salary.
That's all that they give anyone, regardless. I know, because
I've written a bunch already. BUt I appreciate your thoughts and insights. This is why it's said to never mail a letter unless you sleep on it. I appreciate the insights, as this will help me greatly when I am perhaps not in the position to think on the most rational level.

Also, while your boss, or your boss's boss may well deserve to be told to go to hell, word about your letter will get around, and someone you may be friendly with, or who knows of you now and sees you as hard working, etc, may move up and be in a position to hire you in the future...

Although I agree with the guys, I feel a written letter of complaint about your boss to his boss is indeed necessary.

I agree... keep the resignation letter short.
Write a letter of complaint septerately, and send it after you have secured another position.
Oh, and best of luck. I mean that.
