I am doing my own research and also posted at Cool Running...but, if anyone knows anything I can do, I'd appreciate it.

Is what my diagnosis is. The ortho ( very good one) is baffled. I don't eat any of the trigger foods, for god's sake, I was a vegetarian for nearly three years, I eat no cured meats or smoked food or organ meats or pate. I do like my shrimp, but am cutting all shellfish out of my diet, I am fairly young and in good shape. I am now cutting even organic red wines out of my diet.

The dr is baffled, and so am I. If I don't get the srthritic gout under control, he will NOT replace my great toe joints or do the bunion surgery, and my foot joints will be destroyed entirely in about ten years. He wants to replace the great toe joints AFTER the gout is under control, and I am fine with that. My husband recently had both hips replaced at a fairly young age due to degenerative osteo arthritis and 9 months later is running around like a schollkid on Skittles. I'm lucky to have an understanding and supportive partner.

I am allergic to both of the commonly precribed medications for gout; Allopurinol gives me a nasty rash which can lead to skin shedding and more serious conditions and colcechin makes make tongue and throat swell.

Does ANYONE here have this condition and if so what do you do?

I am being sent to the rhuematologist, neurologist (because of the numbing and electric shock sensation in my feet since the emergency bone infection surgery in October) and blood tests, and a pain management specialist.

I am scared, and confused, more so becuase the dr was baffled as to why I have this with my age, genetic history, diet, and fitness level. He said he has seen it once or twice in someone my age, but not in a female. I scared, and would take any advice.

Thank you.

Kristin, I'm sorry to hear you are suffering with this Sad

I did a search on our web site here at work and there were some informative articles that might help. Go to www.clevelandclinic.org and type in "gout" in the search field. We have a hospital down in Florida ( I think that's where you are from) so maybe this can give you some additional resources.

I hope you find some answers soon and get some relief from this. It sounds incredibly painful.
