Posted: 10/02/03 - 17:17 Post subject: Help! Losing Motivation...
I'm getting quite discouraged about running at the moment. Recently I have been asking myself whether it is worth it to continue with the sport. I'm losing motivation to train now... This year has been my crappiest yet...injury after injury ever since March-Started out with a stress fracture diagnosed in April a week before a goal race, had a 7 week layoff and spent the rest of the summer regaining my former mileage and abstaining from racing. In September, back into layoff mode (on and off) again after recurring shin splints and hamstring soreness. I have a 10k race coming up in 3 weeks and I missed so much valuable training time....So much for all the goals that i have set this year...

dont give up completley... youve been injured, running more is only gonna make it worse... take it easy and dont stress about it... that will only make it worse too. worry about school and that piano exam and whatever else you have going on...

Tim,
I feel your pain, I really do. I haven't run since April 8th of this year. I was running 40 mpw and getting ready to run my first marathon (Madison with all the other riff-raff) and I got side lined with some mystery problem. Knee pain that is still with me. I am on my 3rd PT and looking at every possibility that could cause this pain. It has been a long road but I will return to running and I will complete my goals. You have to stay strong. IMHO, running is as much a mental sport as a physical. Going out and running is easy, but staying out running takes everything you have at times.
Hang in there buddy! Good Luck! Paul

I feel your pain. Although I haven't had an injury, I got a bit burned out. I'm only running 2 or 3 days a week right now, and spending my free time doing other things. It's been very refreshing. I'll get back to it, but for right now I'm gonna relax.

I totally relate. I've been off for the better part of a year between injuries and illness, and I am literally starting over from almost nothing. I went from running 40MPW to barely being able to run a mile without dying.
First thing, put the watch away and just go out and run. Don't worry about the time, the pace, the distance, just run til you feel like stopping ala Forrest Gump. It'll come back but you have to swallow your ego and just run for you for a while. Plan to race next year.....or you'll drive yourself right back into the ground again pressuring yourself to improve.
And definitely try cross training, just for the variety if you can. Does your school have a pool? Swimming rocks!

Give it time Tim.
You are young and have time to build it back up.
Make sure you don't push it too hard and injure yourself even more. Before you know it, you'll back on track.

Maybe set a goal opposite of what you usually would. "I'll only run 2 miles at a time, 3 times this week" or "I'll run a new route twice this week" Once it goes back to being fun and something you look forward to, then think about building mileage, racing again.
By the way, if you don't run, I understand they take away all your posts and make you start at 0.

You mentioned wanted to get into cycling and swimming in a different thread. Why don't you cut back your running mileage and bump up your cycling and learn to swim. That whole balancing three disciplines can be pretty tricky and it definitely keeps things from getting boring.

hey, hang in there...it can get really frustrating. i am just recovered from 2 months with AT. The sidelining was horrible for me too. You have to think positively that you can beat the injury. Are you getting the right nutrition? What is your stretching routine? Just one step at a time and eventually you'll be out there again. Hope you're feeling better.

Thanks for all the encouragement and advice guys! I'm almost recovered now-still having some slight soreness in the lower left leg and the thighs. Ill still be keeping my overall mileage low this week and Ill probably omit speedwork or any hard runs. The swims will still be ongoing-perhaps on some days Ill do both running and swimming-that will be fun.. But the main thing I'm aiming for right now is to stay injury free until race day on Oct 26th.
