hey all, i'm doing a project on workplace wellness, and just to broaden my resources - i'm gonna fire off a couple quick questions, and if you wanna post or pm me with answers that'd be super de duper!
1. Does your office offer any kind of workplace wellness program? ie. stress seminars, smoking cessation, walking club, exercise bike, daycare, etc...
2. If so what kind? (if you answered no to #1, skip down a few questions)
3. How many people are in your office?
4. do you have any idea how many people attend?
5. are the results generally positive?
if you answered NO to number one,
1. do you have any idea why you don't?
oh and if anyone really really feels strongly and having or not having, or wish they had a program or something.... feel free to pm me and tell me all about it just looking for a few more perspectives.

No. But they do offer flu shots.
2. If so what kind? (if you answered no to #1, skip down a few questions)
3. How many people are in your office? 100 total in firm, 30 here.
4. do you have any idea how many people attend? About 75% got them.
5. are the results generally positive? Yes.
if you answered NO to number one,
1. do you have any idea why you don't? Liabilities for physical activities.

I wish they did, in fact I tried to get a sort of "excersise incentive" program going here during tax season, much like our "Rev it Up" campaigns, no dice.

No
3. How many people are in your office?
7 or 20, it depends on how you count.
1. do you have any idea why you don't?
Boss has his own country club membership and at 65 keeps himself pretty fit (doesn't eat very well though). The two people below him don't care about keeping fit. That only leaves four people. I think you know how I feel about keeping in shape. One guy that just turned 60 eats pretty good and does a little exercise and the other 2 just don't seem to care that they're overweight and out of shape.

I was playing receptionist for a few minutes when a guy from the gym down the street came in with a quote he had worked up. I was pretty impressed that the upper mgmt. had even considered getting a group one for the office. After looking at the price per person though, I can guarantee that it's not going to happen. (mostly because those that care about their health are already doing something about it and those that don't care, just don't care and wouldn't go to the gym anyway.)

1. Does your office offer any kind of workplace wellness program? ie. stress seminars, smoking cessation, walking club, exercise bike, daycare, etc... NO as a matter of fact we are allowed to smoke in the shop and everytime they try to ban it, the shop employees quickly point out that the welding is very harmful too and if they are going to ban smoking they need to install exhaust hoods. So they do nothing. We are a very unhealthy company.
2. If so what kind? (if you answered no to #1, skip down a few questions)
3. How many people are in your office? 90's

1. Does your office offer any kind of workplace wellness program? ie. stress seminars, smoking cessation, walking club, exercise bike, daycare, etc... No
2. If so what kind? (if you answered no to #1, skip down a few questions) N/A
3. How many people are in your office? Approximately 350
4. do you have any idea how many people attend? N/A
5. are the results generally positive? N/A
if you answered NO to number one,
1. do you have any idea why you don't? I'm hopeful that is from a lack of education about the possible savings in insurance costs as I am part of a small group attempting to gain approval of a wellness program modeled after a very successful program at my previous place of employment. I truly believe they don't understand the potential return on what would be a relatively small investment in creating a wellness program.
The wellness program at my previous employer provided the following:
1. Employer subsidized gym dues for interested employees.
2. Employer created a means by which gyms on the approved list would track attendance of participating employees.
3. Employees who participated in fitness activities for an average of 5 hours per week for each thirty day period received 8 hours per month compensation time.
4. Employer paid for smoking cessation programs.
5. Employer provided annual health fairs where free preventive medical services were provided.
As a result, during the first year of the wellness program, employer costs were recouped through savings on medical insurance payments (employer was self-insured) and experienced a 20% decrease in medical insurance claims.

if you answered NO to number one,
1. do you have any idea why you don't? GM and most of his staff are non-exercise oriented, a few are overweight smokers. A couple of them do run and take care of themselves though. I'm sure they have memberships to big buck health clubs and wouldn't be caught working out with the serfs.

We just started a program this week in conjunction with the State Health Plan (the insurance plan for state employees & teachers).
2. If so what kind? (if you answered no to #1, skip down a few questions)
It is supposed to be a 18 month study, so we will get free screenings with maybe a few health/fitness seminars.
3. How many people are in your office?
Around 400 people or so.
4. do you have any idea how many people attend?
About 150 or so attended the Kick-Off session yesterday. I think maybe 40-50 people will actually go through with the program.
5. are the results generally positive?
Let's hope so.

Don't get me started on this one. I'm appalled that my particular employer (State of NC) has waited this long to do anything about the health of its employees. There really is no impetus for change. Part of the reason we never get any raises or fully-funded education programs is because of the state's rising health costs. People haven't figured out that maybe if we didn't suck the money from the health plan, there would be some leftover for salaries/education/roads/etc. I'm going to stop there before I get on a rant or something.

No, but a number of people walk at lunchtime informally
2. If so what kind? (if you answered no to #1, skip down a few questions)
3. How many people are in your office?
~50, will increase to 75 by Q3

I only assume it's due to financial and lack of other resources. Interestingly, health/dental/vision care are self insured. One would think that it would be to the company's immediate benefit to arrange such programs. Conversely, as self-insured they don't have the buying power to pay for such programs at a reasonable cost. One last comment, about 10 of us have negotiated a corporate rate with the gym that I go to. I say about 10% per month because of it.

1) No we don't have one as far as I know. A fellow teacher just recently offered to help the other teachers if they want to do a weight program, but that's about it. A few of the teachers get together to run in the mornings, but it is not an official program.
As far as why we don't have one, I'm not sure. It would make sense for the teachers to set a good example by staying in shape, stop smoking, etc.

thanks guys you've been a great help. i'll take more responses to anyone else that wants too post.
ps. Brewer - i like the logic at your office. are they the kind of people that if they saw someone lying have dead on the ground, would just drag him around and say "well he's dying anyways"? that and i'm pretty sure there's some safety laws with that...
